PSU-only Recruits & Commits news

I'd be surprised if Sumpolec does. They faced twice last year, Asher won both times 5-0.

IMO the only AAA 189s who might test him are Spencer and Heard -- not that I expect either to cut to 172.
Looks like he Teched him 17-1 at Powerade!!!!

Perry is on fire this year. 21-0 all pins. He looks way bigger and stronger on video. I watched both their quarters on papower. Perry might be too big and strong

I could be wrong but I remember something like this Happening last year there. We thought we would see Perry vs Bassett. Then Perry lost and Bassett teched the kid.

When a JV wrestler from a school beats our PSU recruit that is wild to me. Is the JV kid getting any looks? Crazy

Not a great event for our two future Nittany lions. Herring drops to Harer. Not sure about Perry, was he hurt. Losing to a back up is surprising and then Basset teched that same kid in first period.

Wasn't a JV kid. Jackson Butler placed at states last year and just dropped down from 150.

No idea why the tourney allowed schools multiple entries per weight.

Perry didn’t really get to any offense, which for some reason he gets in that funk and loses to top tier kids. Reminds me of Bartlett when he just waits or doesn’t shot, making it a 1 score match.

Looks like Perry was winning his next match in the consi-semis, and MFF’d. Then FF’d and took 6th.

If it wasn't for PSU/Nebraska tonight, I would have driven to Blairstown. I feel Henkel is going to surprise people at the next level.

2025 Escape The Rock Tournament

172 pounds Round of 16- #2 Asher Cunningham (STCO) VS #18 Frankie Pieffer (StED)

Period 1:
Circling, Asher tries to trip Pieffer, but finds no luck with that. Pieffer gets deep in on a leg, but Asher is defending with good pressure. Asher keeps working & comes behind for the TD, 3-0. Asher throws in a boot & has Pieffer bellied out on the mat. Asher hits a tilt & is getting swipes. Asher keeps looking for a pinning combo, but can't find one & has to settle for 4 NF, 7-0. Asher is back on top with both boots in now & Pieffer is bellied out again. Asher pretends he's letting Pieffer up, but then jumps back on top & breaks Pieffer down. Pieffer works back to his feet & Asher lets him go, 7-1. Asher shoots, but Pieffer fights out of it. Asher shoots again, gets to a leg & finishes off another TD, 10-1. Asher rides out the period. 10-1 Asher, plus a big bucket of riding time.

Period 2:
Pieffer defers & Asher chooses top. Asher throws a boot in off the whistle & is looking for another tilt. Stoppage & restart for something. Asher throws the boot in immediately off the restart. He keeps working & gets Pieffer bellied out. Asher has something locked up, but I don't know what it's called. Asher rolls Pieffer to his back & is getting swipes, but can't get the fall. Asher lets Pieffer up a little, adjusts & switches to a bar arm. He runs Pieffer over, gets him flat & gets the fall!

Asher Cunningham FALL Frankie Pieffer (3:12)

2025 Escape The Rock Tournament

172 pounds Quarter-Final- #2 Asher Cunningham (STCO) VS #7 Gavin Cole (CRS)

Period 1:
Cunningham is in the center & ready to go, waiting on Cole. Circling, hand fighting & head slaps. Cole shoots a low double. Cunningham counters & they're scrambling on the mat. Cunningham comes out on top for the TD, 3-0. He has Cole on his back, but doesn't get enough swipes for points before Cole rolls back to his belly. Cunningham has a boot in & is riding tough. He has Cole bellied out & is looking for a tilt. Cunningham gets swipes & adds 4 NF, 7-0. Cunningham has Cole bellied out again & that's how the period ends. 7-0 Cunningham with lots of riding time.

Period 2:
Cunningham selects top & Cole starts down. Cunningham tries to throw a boot in, but Cole fights it off. Cunningham tries again, gets the boot in & then gets Cole flat on his belly again. Cole gets hit with a stall call. Cunningham rides Cole for the first minute of the 2nd. Cole is still on his belly & can't seem to get off it, or do anything other than flop around like a fish out of water. Cole gets hit with another stall call, point Cunningham, 8-0. Cunningham rides out the entire 2nd period. 8-0 Cunningham, with 2-min more riding time than the 1st period.

Period 3:
Cole selects neutral. Good choice! Circling & head tapping. Cunningham is holding center & Cole is circling around him. Cole shoots, gets to a low single, but Cunningham counters & comes behind for another TD, 11-0. Cunningham gets a boot in & Cole's stuck on bottom again, 1-min left. Cole gets back to his base, but not for long & Cunningham has him bellied out again. Cunningham is looking for a tilt, but can't lock it up, so he's just hammering on the back of Cole's head & neck. Stoppage & restart for something. Excessive brutality, maybe? Cole is still down & he's not going anywhere. Cunningham rides out the period. He must have had over 4-minutes of riding time.

Asher Cunningham MD Gavin Cole 11-0

Mods: I forgot there was a dedicated thread for this tournament. Maybe the PBP should be moved there?

Asher is so dang tough. He makes that match with Burton a lot better this time. I bet he did a lot of versa climbers since Ironman getting into shape.

Without ever seeing Asher wrestle I've come to two conclusions. 1. Since most of the PSU wrestlers say that once Casey gets you down, you NEVER get up, that has obviously been drilled and drilled and drilled to Asher. Secondly, I imagine he is going to be a bigger version of Zain once the boots go in. Going to fun watching him.
