Quick look at how PSU is performing when it comes to getting the players it wants while focusing on its primary footprint (PA/MD/NJ) against the region and B1G East.

This is all based on the Rivals offer sheets and players that both schools have offered, so take that fwiw.

vs. Pitt: 11-0

vs. Maryland: 8-2

vs. Rutgers: 9-0

vs. Ohio State: 4-7

vs. Michigan: 5-4

vs. Michigan State: 6-8

Taking a little deeper look at the OSU and MSU recruiting battles with PSU, only two of those 15 verbals that did not choose PSU come from inside PSU's wheelhouse in the mid Atlantic (OSU verbals Hall and Walker).

MSU is cleaning up in Michigan and Illinois, so PSU holding on to Hill and Joseph will be important, but D'Antonio isn't doing much of anything in the Mid-Atlantic against PSU.

If Franklin's primary goal is protecting the home turf, he's doing about as good of a job imaginable but still room for improvement "nationally". PSU is 12-4 against OSU/UM/MSU (schools outside the footprint) for local talent. It would be nice to start grabbing some Florida/Texas/California talent to make inroads there for the future since this is one area where OSU has done extremely well. Other than that, I have a really hard time getting critical of how things are going in Franklins first full recruiting cycle.

Thanks for the info, but looking at PSU vs Pitt is simply not a relevant statistic, except to those who are stuck in the 1970's and early 1980's.

The more telling statistic is vs. Big Ten schools, and not even all of them. Maryland and Rutgers? Meh. OSU, Michigan, MSU are the real benchmarks.

Really the next step in the recruiting battles versus tO$u will be consistently getting some top talent from Ohio. It's great that CJF went to Ohio and got an OT, but I don't believe the kid had a tO$u offer. Getting Ferns will be a step forward, if it happens. But I believe CJF targeted the tall WR from Cleveland that committed to MSU. tO$u has gotten top talent from PA, may get some this year (Hamlin), and likely will get some going forward, and CJF needs to land some top 10 Ohio recruits as well. Hard to exclude Ohio from the "Primary Footprint" area - I would say the primary footprint also includes Ohio, NY, DC and the top part of VA. Obviously the dominate the state area is somewhat smaller.....

Penn State has plenty of talent. The key is coaching and in that regard 2015 is a big year for Franklin. PSU should beat the I schools, Purdue, RU, Maryland, Minny, etc. on a regular basis. The east division is nuts, really too tough. There could be years of 2 and 3 team ties for first place. tOSU is not that far ahead of PSU
