Penn State head coach James Franklin spent about 10 minutes on the Big Ten coaches teleconference just moments ago.
The topics and his paraphrased answers below:
Christian Hackenberg:
I think the last six weeks he’s played really well. You look at his TD to INT ratio, he’s really done a good job of protecting the ball and was making big plays down the field, so I think all those things have improved. It’s about the improvement of the guys around him to continue.
The TD to INT speaks volumes about the consistency and accuracy. It’s an area he’s still looking to improve and they’re looking to improve as a team.
Recruiting goals this week:
Will have normal Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday practices. They’ll be modified versions of those practices with emphasis on young guys, will hold out guys with nagging injuries all year they haven’t been able to get over. Will have practice Thursday for just non-travel practice guys with the GAs working on fundamentals. Coaches will be out recruiting on Friday, get some downtime on Saturday, and then Sunday get back to work. Instead of splitting time with previous game and upcoming game, will spend it all on upcoming game.
Community service this week:
Trying to instill community service values as freshmen. Want it to catch on early in their careers so it will catch on for the rest of their lives. Had them out all over the community yesterday. That’s one of the really positive things they have going on. Really proud of the guys for what they’re doing with those projects.
Facilities master plans:
Just got back from his meeting with Sandy about facilities upgrades. Great facility, great bones, really good infrastructure and size they need, it’s the updates. Have made some progress but still have work to do. Just want things upgraded. More for other sports is possibly getting another indoor facility on campus because theirs is packed from 6 a.m. to midnight once weather turns, which makes it difficult to do upkeep on it. It’s used 20 hours a day. Those are some of the things that are in discussion. Obviously a lot of conversation about the stadium, but focus is on the season and discussions about Lasch were things that happened before the season.
