I caught up with incoming Penn State defensive end Shane Simmons and his mother, Jen, this morning for a feature story that we’re running in our Blue-White Game preview magazine. I'd like to share a couple quick notes from the interview here.
Since the Under-Armour All-America game in January, for which he was elected captain, Simmons has been mostly holed up inside of DeMatha Catholic’s weight room with the goal of adding as much healthy bulk to his frame as he can before enrolling at PSU this summer.
“I am working out and I’m putting more weight on,” Simmons said. “Just drinking protein and eating a lot more.”
“A lot more,” Jen added, laughing. “I’m not looking forward to him leaving, but I should’ve taken stock in Harris Teeter and Whole Foods before this spring.”
Shane reports to currently weigh about 240 pounds, up nearly 10 since his signing day listing of 230. He’s been on Dwight Galt’s strength program since February, and he’s also been working closely with Mark McCain, DeMatha’s strength and conditioning coach/head of player personnel.
“(McCain) is amazing and he spends one-on-one time with Shane,” Jen said. “So, (Shane is on) Coach Galt’s program, plus Mark overlays that. DeMatha is awesome, because he’s still able to work out in all of their top-of-the-line facilities and weight room everyday.”
Simmons will make his next visit to Penn State for the Blue-White Game (April 16) before he graduates from DeMatha June 3.
He’s then set to report to campus to begin his college career June 25.
