Jose Quintana traded from the White Sox to the Cubs. The Cubs gave up a lot. No. 1 prospect Eloy Jimenez, a power-hitting outfielder, and No. 2 prospect Dylan Cease, a 100-mph right-hander, go to the White Sox along with minor-league infielders Matt Rose and Bryant Flete.

Good trade for the Cubs? The Cubs will have Quintana for a few years under contract and his pitching record so far in 2017 isn't up to his past few seasons. Or did the White Sox steal the farm?

Worth a try for Cubbies. Unlike our Bucs, they can afford to make a mistake. If he doesn't work out they can just go out and buy a pitcher via free agency. That said, the Pirates should have rolled the dice. He has a team friendly contract and Bucs' prospects appear to have been overrated.

Looks like a win/win for both. Sox now have 9 of the top 68 prospects in MLB and the Cubs add a badly needed arm under control through 2020.

FWIW:

Just because they may be the CUBS top prospects, doesn't mean they are great prospects (remember, the Cubs have either called up or purged a lot from their system over the last couple years)

Cease, in particular, looks to be as much of a lottery ticket as a prospect.
He's young, but even on the free-swinging low minors he's having trouble throwing strikes.

Jiminez is further along and probably a bit safer. That said he's still a long ways off, and he's gonna have to hit a lot to have value (defensively he is strictly a corner outfield type)

I expect the Cubs are pretty happy.


If the Pirates had surrendered THEIR top two prospects, that would have been a MUCH higher cost.
