A bit truncated this week. Had a few other things on my plate this evening.
On this week’s practices:
Practiced Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday with everybody, then the travel guys were done today. The GAs and Franklin ran a pure non-travel practice today. 7 on 7, team, skelly work. Not live like on Sunday, but coaching. Those guys were the focus, and it was awesome. Able to take time, work through details and just coach them. Rest of the year it’s about the other guys, and today it was more about basics. Something he thinks they’ll do for bye weeks forever, but has never been a part of that.
On passing game against Michigan:
They like to play man coverage. It’s going to be a challenge. Been working on it all week. Will have to take some shots down the field. Drop-back passing game, need to hit higher percentage, but on shot plays they’re completing ridiculously high 47 percent of those plays. Would make life easier if were completing more underneath stuff.
On Jim Haslett:
Has been working on the offense all season. Has been there all the time. Franklin gets in every morning around 5:40, and Jim is usually already there. Only time he’s not is he usually leaves Thursday to watch son at IUP. But, very involved. He’s been a real asset for them. Great perspective. Has done a really good job of voicing opinions but not stepping on toes. For as much experience as he has, a strong asset for the staff.
On special teams:
Will have Joe Julius back for Michigan. Tyler did good job with PAT and FG last week, but had something going on with him for kickoffs. Didn’t want to squib. Just wasn’t hitting it right. Punting, haven’t been able to swing field all year. Need to play at higher level and improve there. Their offense gets a lot of opportunities due to defense playing well and creating short fields. Veteran team is Michigan.
Injuries:
To give guy “with a shoulder” the time this week has been important. Clearly talking about Nassib. Barkley has had an ankle for five weeks and has played with it. Last week, thought he’d come out a few times, but fought through it. Combination of being off legs and having time to recover.
Time to get out from under sanctions:
Everyone wants the answer to be tomorrow. Headed in that direction. At Michigan, veterans and Coach Hoke recruited three straight top 10 classes. Stockpiled talent and experience. You’re looking for experience, talent and depth. PSU is talented, but doesn’t have depth. Next season will be first with 85 filled. Excited about rest of season and next year. It’s going to take a couple of years.
Michigan game start time:
Says he might like it to be a night game.
