Rankings out - making up serious ground

https://www.flowrestling.org/rankings/6031577-ncaa-rankings-2017-18/27019-lions-creep-up-on-buckeyes

Nick up to 6th as I predicted. Like him to stay there or slot in from 3-5.

Obviously waiting until Semis to get Coon or Snyder would be ideal. He can jump Butler and Stoll, but not sure who Kasper has left

Kasper may face McDonald/Boykin at ACC Championships. He was down 6-1 against McDonald on Friday night but came back to win 8-6. Strange things can happen...

NaTo gets dumped from #4 to #1 ...

McKenna gets dumped from #6 to #11 ...

Nick Lee @ 8
Nevills up from 8 to 6

Mix that all up and the hypothetical pre-bonus ranking point totals are basically a dead heat (120.5 vs 117)

Extra Credit:

FLO lists 5 Nittany Lions in the P4P Top 9 .... including #4, #3 & #2.
Not too shabby.

I never understand how somebody can be ranked behind someone at a weight and ahead of them in P4P.

Kasper

W: Boykin, ButlerX2
L: Nevills, Hall

Nevills
W: Hall, Hemida, Kasper
L: Boykin, Butler

Butler
W: Hall, Nevills
L: Boykin, Kasper X2, Hemida

Rankings should look like this:
4. Kasper
5. Nevills
6. Butler

Eeh, so what?

Since, unlike football's national beauty contest, the wrestling championship is ultimately determined on the mat, the only ranking that's meaningful is total points scored when the tournament ends in Cleveland. All the rest is really just fan-interest fluff.

The "so what" is that seedings at NCAAs can be important. For instance, rather not have Nevills seeded at 7 thru 10, which would likely mean an earlier match with Snyder or Coon.

This concept is discussed on here as nauseam on here during the summer.

Think of it as this:

Ranking: Body of PAST work
P4P: “Future Potential”

Heil ranked 13th P4P? That has to be a mistake right?
you think he should be higher? 4, 1, 1 in 3 tries buys you lots of p4p slack. Heil's 2 losses are also to other p4p wrestlers in what will very probably be the toughest weight class this year. YMMV of course.

Was just referring to the current team point totals.

PSU has five duals left to wrestle (Minnesota, Rutgers, tOSU, Iowa, Buffalo).
A lot can happen along the way. From where I sit, it really doesn't matter all that much which team's [subjectively-determined] individual weight rankings add up to what right now when there's still so much wrestling left to be done. Some rankings will doubtless go up, others down, and the only given is that the unexpected can and will happen somewhere along the way.

Even Flo advises not to read too much into their latest rankings. I take them at their word.

Michigan down to 6th. I don't think there is a staff in Div I that does less with more. They have the resources and location to be a perennial top 5 program yet they usually struggle to finish top 10 and even with their best team in a long time they are currently outside the top 5.

This still doesn't make sense for the case of IMar being behind VJ in the 165lbs rankings and ahead of him in the P4P, though.

It never makes sense. P4P compares guys across weight classes. That's what P4P is. I've never heard of P4P being described as ranking guys based on future potential. To my knowledge it's never been used like that in any combat sport. P4P are rankings across weight classes and it doesn't make sense to rank a guy behind someone at a weight and ahead of them in P4P.

Don't let Gibbons hear you talkin' smack about The Silver Fox like that...

Still no respect for Cruz, the undefeated returning champ.

This is where the NWCA All Star Classic makes no sense to me in how it is treated for rankings. I'm not sure why matches that do not count toward NCAA seeding or overall record count toward rankings. Like sure, Darian Cruz lost to Nick Piccininni in a match that doesn't matter, so what?

I am not counting Zahid Valencia toward this, simply because I think he has earned the right to be ranked ahead of Mark this season considering he's beaten Bo Jordan twice. (Even though he was ranked ahead of Mark before beating Bo).

It never makes sense. P4P.

1. Joseph is currently #1 @ 165, but he is 1-2 lifetime vs IMar has more lifetime losses than IMar.

2. Write FLO and complain.

If you're a returning National Champion without a loss, please explain how you could possibly fall in ranking when you haven't lost? It's nonsense.

Ahh, no I wasn't thinking Heil should be higher. That's funny.

Actually, the only rankings that the initial poster posted were from No Wrestling, and Cruz moved up from 3 to 2 in their poll.

I see the bucks slipping as we gain momentum. Weird how it seems to be coming down to the two Nicks and Rasheed. Everything all the other athletes do or do not do won't make half as much difference if those three under or over perform.
