Lost in the shuffle following Nolf's incredible achievement, Rasheed again fades badly in the third period after looking like a world-beater early against Illinois's Rodrigues, who surely deserves a lot of credit for pushing the pace hard. If Rasheed could wrestle with consistency thru 7 minutes, he could AA as he is that talented, IMHO. As it is, looks like weight management continues to be an issue. What can be done?

That was hard to watch, especially since I think he had the pin in the first period. I kept thinking he would get the escape and tie the match sending it to OT. He just had nothing left.

I don't think there is anything that can be done that hasn't been tried.

I am sure the coaches have gone through the "what ifs" in their minds many times. He still seems like the best choice at 165 and I think you roll with him, push the extra cardio and watch the diet. He went some time in between these two meltdowns so you hope the come tourney time, he is good to go.

With the heavyweight lack of points issue and a now an unknown situation at 184, all bonus points seem critical. Rasheed has to be the guy.

Surprised to see this as well. Been watching Rasheed closely for signs of fatigue in matches and up until this one, hadn't seen much. Rodrigues pushed the action and that may have had something to do with it. Or perhaps Rasheed didn't have his weight fully under control for this match and it cost him. The only thing that can be done is for him to manage his weight as best as he can but he might just be too big at this point to successfully cut to 165 and be consistent. Given his ability to score bonus points he is still the best alternative at 165 in my opinion.

Weight management is easier said then done. If what we saw Saturday was indeed weight management, he wouldnt be the first kid to have a fall off mid season. I personally thought he handled the scuffle well and would expect more of that rasheed than what we saw at VaTech or Illinois.

The kid simply lost some discipline managing his weight and it showed.
If the cut is hard, the easier to lose control of the weight and the bigger the reason to be overly strict We will not know, but the biggest tell for this week is what did he weigh yesterday morning and what does he weigh today.

He isn't the first to begin to struggle mid season, he isn't even the only one struggling right now. His struggle is just more evident

Sometimes the hardest part of weight management is stepping on a plane. He won't have to do that for nationals.

It certainly didn't help his rehydration that the meet started at 141 and Zain and Jason had short matches.

Not worried about Rasheed. Mid season blip - it's not like he's losing close ones to chumps. He still has that killer cradle and will be catching fools in it come tournament time.

And some very experienced fools....

I'm not worried either. I can't predict where he will finish at this point, but he is clinging to the edge of the podium and there will be bonus.

I'm withholding judgment on how concerned we should be until mid-February.

It all comes down to who will score more for you at Nationals. Morelli isn't a BP guy so he needs to convince the coaches he can make a deep enough run, which means he needs high-caliber matches (which he is running out of). Rasheed could easily get a couple pins in at least the opening round and the backside. I doubt either would go 0-2. Case is in Shakur's favor currently unless the grind of BIG gets to him, which I doubt as well.

The coaches will make the right decision.

I think he's doing the best he can with it he should be the guy at 165 considering what you can get out of him as soon as he comes out guys that really Like to hand fight and keep pressure on through a match like McFadden, Rodriguez or an Iowa guy will probably make him show signs of fatigue but overall I think Corey will be alright

any experienced wrestler knows when u mentally sense a fall and feel u are moments from it...it is a huge physical dump when it doesnt happen...he is prob not very used to not pinning from that situation....i know this feeling from personal experience

My opinion is that a top-16 seed would really help, but right now seems unlikely. Our 165 pounder has Sutton (Mich), Bo Jordan (tOSU), Preisch (Lehigh), Vettese (MSU), and likely Roshkopf (NC St), or Dieringer (Ok St) left.

If it's Shakur... a Sutton, Priesch, and Vettese win are necessary, and places him squarely on the cusp of a seed. Those wins and a Jordan, or Roshkopf or Dieringer win will guarantee it...but that's a tall order. An unseeded Shakur will have to hope for a good 1st round draw or do all his damage in wrestlebacks.

See El-Jefe's post below to see how B1G's could affect Shakur's seeding possibilities.

Right now I'm guessing B10 seeds are 1-2 Jordans, 3 Rodrigues, 4-5 Perrotti and Welch, 6 Wilson, 7 Rasheed. No others ranked.

If he finishes 4th in that crowd (seems feasible), that should get a decent NCAA seed. 7th might not.

Assuming he doesn't beat a Jordan in the B10 quarters, his B10 consis performance could play a big role in his NCAA draw.

Yeah I agree with seeding being important, I don't know if wrestling for a better seed in the grand scheme is going to be huge considering all of the moving parts around NCAAs. Last year JDJ finished 4th and got the 4 seed at Nationals. This should be great, except his prize is Brewer in the second round.

Tsirtsis got Neff first round, Neff AA's in that bracket. IMAR got Parsons, Telford got Myers, Garrett got Lambert. The odds of having a very high seed and a tough opponent are greater than zero. So I think a seed helps, but I'm not sure by how much.

This is all arguing in superfine details though. I want to say I agree with you in the 60-80% range, if that makes any sort of sense.

Not arguing, discussing ;). My perspective is different that most, so just sharing facts and some opinions out there like everyone else, just with a different point of view.
