I wanted to comment about something Byers mentioned post-match on Friday. He said RBY was planning on staying locally to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday with his family after the match.

My wife and I just made the dual trips from central PA to pick up our two kids from college for Thanksgiving. We picked up child #2 in Ithaca NY on Friday afternoon, and child #1 from Pittsburgh on Saturday morning. Getting kids home from college for the holidays can be challenging, as I’m sure families of athletes know all too well. The thought of Roman being able to enjoy the holidays with his family, without requiring them to navigate the logistics of cross country travel by themselves, brought a huge smile to my face. I have no idea if Cael purposely planned the ASU dual to coincide with the Thanksgiving holiday. Regardless, I’d assume the timing was greatly appreciated by Roman’s family.

Hearing Jeff mention this post-match really removed the sting of the loss for me. As bummed as I was about the loss, I pictured Roman going home with his family. I suspect a loss won’t keep his family from enjoying Thanksgiving.

Mad props to Cael for this. Especially given that getting to State College, Pennsylvania from Arizona isn't exactly very easy. (I did the same trip from State College to Tempe about eight years ago to get from a Nittany Lion home dual to the NWCA All-Star Classic, the same weekend, so I'm well aware of the logistics)

Don't know anything about the timing just prior to Thanksgiving, but it would not surprise me at all that that worked out on purpose. As many/most on board know, Cael tries to get at least 1 away dual near the home of our guys that come from states far away. If Wittlake had ended up coming to PSU we would have had Oregon St on our schedule one of these years.

That's not that uncommon for many coaches...in other sports as well. Rick Majerus used to do that for his out-of-area players, and even used his once-every-four-years foreign trip to Finland because he had a player from that country on his team.

Tom Ryan actually will go a step further, and often have a "home" meet in one of his wrestler's high schools. That's how Kyle Snyder wrestled an Ohio State "home" dual against Maryland at Good Counsel High School, which was within a half-hour of the Maryland campus.

Also, makes me think the reason Cael wanted to push this dual a year was so RBY could redshirt this year. Even more kudos to Cael for NOT redshirting RBY so he could take this trip. You could see me criticize a lot of people for a lot of things, but Cael is certainly a stand-up human being.

I’m hearing lots of criticism on how Cael could have done it better. Did he go through the website that gives double miles??!? :)

how many natl championships.
I don’t know what “it” means, but if you are talking about logistics, I would think the head coach would not spend much of his time on that.
I give there are just the ... is just part of today’s culture.

Why aren’t more people talking about the fact that PSU came in 2nd to Army in Black Knight Invitational?

You could give it it's own thread?!?! Then you could see how many people really care about it. (prediction... probably not many)

First I heard Cael wanted to push the dual. Who told you that?

Was mentioned on the Pac-12 Network during the broadcast.
I didn't hear it and I wouldn't be surprised if it was accurate, but it's odd that the only source is second- or third-hand relayed by out-of-town broadcasters. (Or maybe it was Chertow, who I think still lives in State College?)

In any case, even if Cael wanted to push the dual and that request was rejected, it's not necessarily then the case that it played into the decision to not redshirt RBY this year. It was obvious from the start of this season that RBY would likely be key to repeating in March, so I have trouble buying that Cael would've shirted him if only Zeke had agreed to push the dual a year. It makes for a nice narrative, and I guess it could be true, but I'm having a hard time believing it's the case.

I didn't hear it either--but the intel could have certainly come from Robles as well. Zeke seems far less tight-lipped than our crew, and Anthony seems to spend a lot of time w/ the team. Chertow is still in town here, FWIW.

I thought Chertow was on the broadcast, which is why I mentioned. I watched but didn't listen, but saw repeated references to Chertow on Twitter during the match. If

it did come from the ASU side, I can imagine a scenario whereby Cael goes to Zeke and asks to push the dual a year so that I can shirt RBY this year, not necessarily because he intended to do that but because he wanted to move the dual for whatever reason and cited RBY because that reason might play on Zeke's sympathies. Yeah, that's very speculative, but I'm skeptical Cael is communicating to competing coaches his actual redshirt plans, much less basing those decisions on the responses to questions about dual schedules.

I get your logic--just saying it could have come from Robles (accurate or otherwise); Both he and Chertow were on the broadcast with a non-wrestling pbp guy.

If only the ref would've caught all the illegal fists to the back, Penn State might've still prevailed despite the forfeit. Home cookin'.

I picture the ref explaining it Dewey Oxburger like. “Well you lose, you see? If we were wrestling in Nebraska you would have won. You’re getting good at this! Isn’t this fun?

Would've won the tourney if Cael had brought enough backup 184s.
Lol. I don't get the mystery. Cael could care less about winning the army invitational. It'd about getting the kids some time on a mat and see what they have in real time. From watching him coach over the last few years you can see the method of his madness this is his style he does actually coach kids don't know why I'm putting this on this post since I sensed your sarcasm lmfso
