He just won his third state title tonight. Two pins and two majors. Has trouble with clingy dudes who are trying to keep the score low. Probably the most dominant wrestlers of the tourney were Brandon Konecny of Corona Del Sol (Team Champs) and Brandon Courtney (Desert Edge)...of the Arizona Courtneys. Courtney pinned his dude in the finals in :14. Those three are probably our best D-1 prospects. For those going to Ironman next year, Sunnyside (RBY's school) might be headed there. They should have a decent squad there...at least for Arizona.

Thx for info Chief. I haven't seen him a lot and not nearly as much as you have.

What do you predict of the kid as a college wrestler? What weight you think he will end up at?

Do you see him top end as NCAA champ or would you say not that level but definite AA threat?

You've probably seen him more than most here. Interested in your take on the kid

Thanks in advance

I love his prospects...hard nosed kid, athletic, more Iowa than PSU right now but that's just because Sunnyside is that type of program. Not flashy, just very solid and fundamentally sound...especially defensively. He is lanky so he could hit a growth spurt. Has the athleticism that is PSU's hallmark though. Bigger he gets, the closer the field gets but we are talking majors vs TFs/Pins against better kids. That he can make the leap from beating Arizona kids to beating elite kids in freestyle should tell you something. Top 5 prospect to come out of Arizona in state history. Courtney I mentioned above? RBY beat him last year in OT at a H.S. tourney in Phoenix. He has beat him multiple times in freestyle I believe.

In all honesty, between him and Gavin, I don't know which one of us is getting a better deal. I love Gavin...very fun to watch but feel the same about RBY. I would usually have an opinion on who is going to be better in college but it's so close that choosing GT would just be because I am homer.

Chief nailed it imo. RBY is very stingy and very steady. I think he will be a very tough college wrestler and will be a 4 time AA type guy. Great recruit. Gavin is way more fun to watch wrestle imo as he has a little more go for broke mentality. Who on earth wouldn't want either one? I think RBY will be a 141 eventually at PSU and Gavin will be 133 at Iowa. Two pretty special wrestlers.

I think GT may start at 133 but ends up higher for most of his career.

The biggest criticism (if there was one) of Nick Suriano coming out of high school was that he was insanely stingy (hard to score on) but didn't score a lot himself.

We've seen Nick really start to get to his offense this year as he's progressed. He has shown he can score. A matter of fact, I would describe Nick the same way, stingy and steady. If that's how people want to describe RBY then I'm pretty excited.

Anyone have scores from Nicos TFr year to compare scoring? I think it would be an entertaining thread to take a look W-L, who they wrestled, scoring, tourney placing, etc of our TFr Nico, Zain, Morgan, etc along w/ Suriano, hall as we enter the post season.

Just place markers for past, current and possible future success TFr (N. Lee).

Whoever does the work earns a few adult bevs down the line for sure.

Thanks for the info!

He really owned Gilman. 3-0 with a championship victory over him as well. Not even close. And he carried himself with class and dignity to boot.
Do you remember Nico's record against Matt McD? You really ought to meet Thomas sometime. Really nice fella

I love Gilman's style, I really do. He's my favorite Hawk wrestler. Nice guy or not, Nittany Chris describes the problem with Gilman well. You seem too invested to note the obvious.

What weight did Roman wrestle last night ? Teasdale is wavering big time on going to Iowa...Now unless Iowa sets his family up like they did for Spencer that could change...Spencer's Dad was given a BIG time job out in Iowa...There was a lot of talk at the match on Friday this was being looked into in which it should...I am sure they have it covered though.....Oh well no one will stop PSU for years anyway....DYNASTY !!!!

Can we please somehow resist the impulse to become SEC Football fans, where every recruit is a reportable offense, athletes get threatened by "fans," and "fans" poison campus trees over a loss?

Or where "fans" tell the athletes to dump their girlfriends as distractions? Oops, too late on that one ...

Nico never beat McD as far as I know. McD owned Nico. McD was a a heck of a wrestler.

Gilman might be a really personable person when you talk to him, but none of that changes the fact that he's a total clown on the mat. Nico and McD for that matter never did the clownish stuff that Gilman does. If Gilman doesn't win a title this year he's going to be remembers for his bozo type antics more so than his wrestling.

To preface this, I'm not a Hawkeye fan. I grew up in Ames and was a big ISU fan until Cael left and Jackson ran the program into the ground. Now I spend more time on PSU boards that ISU. I worked at the University of Iowa for years and now work across the street from Coe. My son has practiced in both the Coe room and Carver Hawkeye.

Coe is a small liberal arts college 30mins from Iowa City. It makes zero sense that a small liberal arts college, with its own wrestling team, and limited budget, would somehow have the money or the desire to scheme with Tom Brands so he can get a top wrestling recruit. Yes, Spencer's dad got a good VP job at Coe. Fortunate timing for him and the family. But to suggest this is some nefarious
scheme by the Hawkeyes to pay Spencer seems like quite the stretch. This is one conspiracy theory that you guys should probably let go.

Talk like this about Lee and his family is beyond irresponsible. This is how dumbazz myths get started. Last forever. Just knock it off, please.
Nothing harsh just a bunch of guys around Nico talking about it at the match on Friday.....Thank God we have Cael and a clean program...None of my business for real but i would not want to be questioned...JMO

Doubt there was anything nefarious, but I think it stretches credulity to believe that Iowa connections didn't provide The Spencers allowable help in his search including "local knowledge" of the position, references via Iowa City parties who have strong connections at both schools, etc....

Not the first time we have heard it. Very cool...now I can take something stupid over to HR and apply it to all PSU fans ;)

Hey Spyker...might want to look at Larry Lee's resume. More than qualified for the job. One might even say he probably took a step down in pay from Carnegie Mellon to Coe.

Tom Brands went up to Coe College with his version of Luca Brasi (M*) and Vito Corleone'd Coe's President..."Made him an offer he couldn't refuse." Spyker...you are the gift that keeps on giving.

Much better AZ, tell us how you really feel!

So you doubled down on an irresponsible comment by responding with a second one. I'm sure Nico would appreciate being tied to your comments.

There's no "you guys" on this one. Just a "you." Singular.
