What a way to start of the finals of the 2016 Finals. Proverbial finals SON... Nico Megaludis comes up with the match of his life, his last match of his great career and he comes out as a National Champion. I'm not going to say I didn't shed some tears for Nico... as he went racing into the stands. That would be a lie. Finally... a deserved NATIONAL CHAMPION. Forever known... as a NATIONAL CHAMP!!!
Loved the reaction of his father who's been to so many matches over the years, his mom who lovingly kissed her uber driven and talented son and the hug from his sister who is very close with Nico and herself a Penn State student. They've always been a presence in the Penn State section at every Nationals because Nico has always been a huge presence in the tourney... on Saturday.
LOVED... Seeing Nico so loved, helped transport my emotions also as I remembered his wonderful demeanor after the 2011 season at the awards banquet. Just a very unassuming, yet confident young man with the Western PA accent. Lol
To see Nico's expression after the finals match was over and he was being interviewed, as if he couldn't believe the moment happened after his finals match, was PRICELESS. Those were tears of joy for Nico and I hope many felt them on their face too.
Loved also seeing the emotion come from Zain's father who got a close up from ESPN after Zain's finals match. As much is on the line on the mat, the people that have helped propel that particular Penn State wrestler to such greatness, sit in the stands. Tirelessly driving their young kids to tournaments, paying for entry fees, paying for wrestling camp, buying wrestling shoes, head gear and singlets. To see the emotion coming from Zain's father... a very touching moment also. What this individual and very grueling sport... is all ABOUT.
