#10 Arkansas loses to #23 Texas AM
#11 Tennessee loses to #20 Florida
#12 NC State struggles to beat Uconn
#13 Utah struggles to beat Arizona St
#14 PSU convincingly beats CMU
Penn State moves up to #10 or #11.

A&M is favored over Arkansas. So that wouldn't be a shocker. Interesting thing is, do voters give the Aggies a big bump for it?

UT has lost many head scratchers to Florida in games they should have won. Not sure if this UF team can slow this Tennessee offense down though.

UConn has no hope vs the Wolfpack.

We are close enough to Utah that we could pass them regardless.

NC State won't struggle (if they do yikes) but beating CMU convincingly is unlikely to move us ahead of teams that win.

Honestly doesn't matter. Many opportunities for PSU to move up if they keep winning, regardless of what other teams do or don't do.
Yes, and in today’s era of conference championships and the playoff, i really don’t give a rats ass about anyone’s ranking. The way i see it, it’s no different that the NFL “power rankings” every rando sportswriter regurgitates each Tuesday.

It's good "PR" to have the brand out there. In the discussion so to speak. But at this point, everyone knows that if you win out you are in the playoffs. Yet some will say...."we should be 12....or how did so and so get ahead of us?" As Nick Saban might say....at this point ratings are "rat poison."

These seem a bit pie in the sky to me especially the NC ST struggling unlikely scenario.

I would keep an eye on Clemson and Wake, not that Wake is all that good. But Clemson struggled with Georgia Tech until some very questionable officiating helped out including a very poor targeting call to remove one of techs best defenders. Georgia tech is not good either, they lost by more to Ole Miss and weren't impressive over w. Car. Clemson hasn't been impressive over Furman and LA Tech either. I don't buy them as #5. Now Wake Forest also doesn't belong as #20 and should have lost to Liberty last week but anything can happen.

There is an outside chance that Maryland makes Michigan sweat as the only team with any kind of pulse that Michigan has faced and despite only beating SMU by 7 last week, Maryland is 3-0 and probably doesn't know yet that they aren't in the conversation. I expect them to hang tight for a little while at least.

#7 USC might not be a shoe in over Oregon St away. And it would be hilarious if a less than usual Wisconsin team gave Ohio St issues.

I think we'll pass Utah and NC State just by winning big this weekend as voters will start to ignore the end of 2021 results in favor of the 2022 results combined with our recruiting classes and brand name.

Arkansas and Tennessee are all about their results - if they lose, we pass them; if they win, the stay ahead.

Also I wouldn't be surprised if Oregon St beats USC.

I want psu to win every game of course , and if they do that the rankings will affect it.

But it is different because getting into the CFP is based a lot on perception and rankings play a part in that perception. Beating a team that was ranked at the time you played them still carries more weight than beating an unranked team, even if that ranked team you beat ends the season unranked….it’s all about perception.

While I don’t get too excited about early season ratings they can make a difference. Moving into the top ten this week or next gets us lots of coverage. Helps recruiting, helps ratings, gets us better time slots and coverage for future games. Gets us on highlight sports shows.

Did I say all that helps in recruiting?

The only perception that matters is beating Ohio St and Michigan. 11-1 gets you in the debate.

One thing that's good about the playoffs - you no longer have to worry about a 1994 type situation.

Win all your games and you're going to be in the playoffs.

When it goes to 8 teams, you really will not be able to say that you're the best team but were denied a chance.

That depends on how many other teams are 11-1 or 12-0….then if two teams are tied, a lot depends on how many quality wins they had and the quality wins are based on rankings.

It's going to 12 not 8 :)
