For years now, I've considered picking up some digital timers to control holiday lights. My wife puts a lot of lights up, not just for that holiday in December, but for just about any holiday you can think of. So I started looking around, mostly on Amazon, to find a timer that I could "set it and forget it". At first, I thought I'd be satisfied with one I could just set to cycle on and off 2 times a day... but then the research got me thinking that maybe what I want is one that adjusts to daylight savings time automatically; one that will turn things on at sunset (i.e. variably turn lights on based on when the sun goes down in my area- apparently they make timers that can do that) then turn off at say around 11 PM... then have them go on again at some fixed time in the morning (say 5 AM) then turn off at sunrise. That's when I run into problems, I can't find a description that describes the digital timer working the way I want it to. The closest I came was a GE digital timer that can turn the lights on at sunset then be turned off at a time I set but there's no information if the timer has multiple on/off settings or whether it can use both sunset and sunrise as the on and off times with set times in between (does that make sense?). Anyway, anyone have any experience with this sort of thing and if so, any reccomendations? I want something I can plug into an outlet then plug my extension cord into the timer, I'm not interested in getting into hiring an electrician or worse yet, doing it myself LOL.
