Hey everyone,
I caught up with Lackawanna assistant coach Josh Pardini and safety prospect Kyzir White to talk about White's recent visit to Penn State earlier this week.
This was basically White's first true unofficial visit. He's been to West Virginia a few times and has seen facilities and such because of his brother, WR Kevin White, but this was technically his first structured college visit.
Now, multiple coaches were on the road, including James Franklin, so it wasn't as in-depth as most visits, but from talking to him, he definitely got a good look at what the school and football program have to offer.
"The main thing was the campus tour," White said. "It was good to check everything out and become familiar with that. Some of the coaches were on the road, but I was also able to check out some other things. I met a couple players and I got to check out their weight room and that kind of stuff. It was good. I haven't seen many schools, but I was really impressed with their setup and what they're trying to do there."
He went on to add, "I really liked watching film with Coach Shoop. Sitting down with him, I could tell that he really knows what he's talking about. You can also tell he's a really passionate guy. He loves his job and that impacts his players."
As for his chances of picking up an offer, it sounds like the staff wants to see what happens with a few of their top high school prospects first. Outside of defensive tackle, taking a junior college prospect isn't a necessity. At the same time, White could probably come into this group and earn serious playing time right away.
The staff may also be waiting to see if anyone else transfers. White has to take two more semesters at Lackawanna, so he won't be able to enroll at the school of his choice until this time next year. That would allow the staff to see if any other players transfer after the season, but at the same time, they can't wait too long to offer or they may be too far behind to catch up. So, I think that's what the staff is trying to juggle right now.
"I've gotten the impression that they really want to offer him, but they just have to see how everything works out on their end," Pardini said. "I know Shoop loves him though. From talking to Rahne, he's given me the impression that Shoop wants to offer him, but they just need to see how some other things workout first."
This summer, White would like to visit Illinois, Louisville and Pitt, but it's not easy for him to get around to all of these schools. We'll have to see if he's able to make it or not. I know that Arizona State is also high on his list, but he'll likely have to wait and use an official visit to make it out to Tempe.
Just wanted to pass that info on. I know White would love to check out a game at PSU, but Lackawanna plays all of their games on Saturday. Last year, Lackawanna didn't have a bye week structured into their schedule, so mid-November will probably be the first time he's able to see a game. That'll also depend on whether or not they make a bowl game.
