you guys do know that Michigan (especially under Harbaugh) will be our major competition for recruits now and in the near future? Second will be ND. Actually, historically that has been the case.
But, I think Franklin will be more than able to hold his own. I especially like his "multi-state" reach for talent this year :)

In my opinion recruiting by OSU, Michigan and PSU will restore the Big 10 to the the Big 3 !!!!
I expect schools such as MSU, Wisc, even Nebraska to be at the next level. Really good but not elite.
Any thoughts on this ?

I think this is spot on. I think PSU will see their recruiting area expand under Franklin. Also agree that in time Michigan OSU and PSU will be the top of the big.

I don't think anything is set in stone... meaning that MSU, Michigan, and PSU are all able to close ground on tOSU with regard to recruiting and eventually competing for Big Ten championships. By the same token, tOSU, Michigan, MSU, and PSU could falter and be relegated to the also ran teams in the Big Ten. Because Michigan, tOSU, and PSU are each in the top 5 of winning percentage over the past 5 years, it will be easier for these three to maintain prominance. It doesn't guarantee anything (see PSU 2000-2004) and doesn't prevent other teams from becoming a major player in the conference (see MSU 2013, 2014).

I see Urby losing it at some point and imploding like he did at UF. He has amassed superior talent right now but several schools in the division are closing rapidly. That's what happened at UF a year or two before his health failed/the coeds started talking/4 and 5 stars promised playing time and not getting it turned the locker room upside down. Guarantee that Harbaugh will look to expedite this demise.

Recruiting "our area" isn't enough. I'll define "our area" as six hours driving to campus. The core of a football team will always come from "our area" regardless of the team. For teams in the northeast and midwest to win it not only has to recruit well in "our area", it needs to find difference makers from beyond. See The Ahia State University.

That might happen, but he has considerably more control over his situation at OSU than he did at Florida. Regardless, I wouldn't bank on it.

Art,
I agree on extending our recruiting reach. I do like that he has reached into the South this year NC and Georgia. Plus nice to get kids from Ohio, Michigan and Illinois. Part of my point was that "I think" Franklin will continue to recruit the mid-west and the South. I would like to see a reach into Florida. But, it seems as though he is addressing all of our needs right now. I would imagine (hope) as we win more the PSU brand will draw kids for all over :)
The "our" region referenced the "competition" Michigan, in particular, will give us. I think we will see that as some of the kids from NJ and PA commit to Michigan later this year. I think Franklin hired Haslett to blunt some of Harbaugh's recruiting tactics "selling" the NFL.

Because of the limitations under which Haslett can operate, selling him as PSU's NFL connection can backfire. Not a good thing to stress it and then have kids find out that they can barely talk to him.

I have not been reading "why" Haslett was hired. I was guessing, in part, to add a clear NFL connection to the program. If not for that purpose then why do you think he was hired?

As I said before, my first inclination after hearing the hire was that this was cover in the case Shoop leaves. I hope very much that I'm reading into it, but that was my first thought.
