has changed.. I did not realize that much of reporting was simply watching games and hashout out press conferences. Now we watch or read presser text real time.. and half of the media opps and new derives directly from football offices. Unless your Mike Florio and you have a plant in each NFL camp I'm not sure what more you can do. I know guys who have actually fed info to sites like these.. and I know the sources that some of the guys have had...
I simply come here to talk PSU football.. if I had guys like Gem, Seltz and even Nuke (to a stranger extent) sitting down the hall from I wouldn't have to.. Reporting is minor to me.. I try and cooborate the info in most cases elsewhere anyways.. . It's cool to know that there are other guys just as hooked as me out there. I've read all the PSU books, and know 50x more than my dad about PSU (the guy who got me hooked) but it's cool being able to ask a question about Joe Moore (who the nube's are not even aware of) and having Art give me an answer within 15 minutes. Credit to Art, he really knows his stuff, he is one of the few that seemed to follow PSU in super detail pre-internet.
I'm sure Phil would tell you he has seen some better days health and energy wise.. but also understand the guy is a bit of PSU history book. He has had hits and misses (some famous ones) but the guy managed to make a decent living watching Penn State games!!-- can't get much better life than that.. Phil's old arch rival Tom Lemming has had to drive all over the US (far off of his normal mail route) to probaby make about the same thing Phil does sitting up a base in a place with a low cost of living and great football.
Its funny, cuz I know a lot surly ol' ball coaches like Coach SJ, and all of my college bro's were basically less sober versions of WTNuke... the difference being nobody is as well-versed at speaking "PSU". I can talk football all day long.. but not necessarily in a PSU context like you can here.
I guess I never really thought of these guys as journalists.. years ago this was all "labour of love" stuff and there were no subscriptions (no disrecpect to any PSU beat guys.. to me journalists are left-wing wacko's covering women's rights at strip bars in Tehran...) ESPN "tries" to be journalists...but we know how that goes/went.. The main thing these guys can give us an is recruiting info and I feel the do a pretty good job of that. The main advantage is that if you sift through some thru the info, you'll find some good PSU info. One guy may not know football but he might talk to the OC every day when he's scooping ice cream. Maybe you park RV' sand hang out with the families post game..I'm just a junky.
What's ironic is that PSU is one of the biggest scandal's in history.. an not one journalist has torn apart the 2nd Mile and ran down the truly ugly secrets that will probably never get out there.. Ryan...here is your Pulizter if nobody goes "Ray Gricar" on you while your tracking down leads...-sg
