You asked me a week or so ago why I was so against manned space exploration
1) We do not need to go to the moon or Mars. No country.
2) Pretending to do so wastes billions of $, time and scientific/engineering manpower.
3) It perpetuates far fetched notions about technology. There are no magic bullets left.
Young people should be taught to solve existing problems, not create more. The economics
of colonies or mining bases are ridiculous.
The U.S can do just fine in R & D without manned space exploration. First of all, the Federal Government spend many billions on R&D. Perhaps somewhere between $100-200 billion. State/local governments spend some as do foreign countries.
Private sectors around the world also do plenty of R&D, especially when economic growth is strong.
