Understood that some like Gattis and I can see why, he is a good coach and we know that first hand from his work at PSU. That said, if you examine UM's offense this year versus PSU's offense this year, the #'s are so similar it's uncanny. Consider:
Offensive TD's: PSU 49, UM 47.
Yards Passing: UM 2723, PSU 2663
Yards Rushing: PSU 1830, UM 1706
Clifford vs. Patterson:
TD/Int: Clifford 22/6, Patterson, 21/5
Yards Passing: Clifford 2521, Paatterson 2523
Yards Rushing: Clifford 374, Patterson 66
QB Rating: Clifford 150.6, Patterson 149.6
If you examine those numbers objectively I don't understand how anyone can argue that there is a legitimate distinction between the two in terms of offensive production. And IMHO the one legitimate and clear difference between the two offenses is that Gattis has four veteran WRs all of whom will be high NFL draft picks. In fact three of them, Black, Collins and Peoples-Jones will likely be in the league next year (not sure if they have eligibility remaining or not). Although UM's o-line was overhyped coming into the year I would argue the lines are even, PSU might have had a very slight edge at RB early in the seaon but Charbonnet has emerged as a very nice back, and UM had a perceived edge at QB coming into the year but as the numbers above illustrate, the QBs are equal. So on balance today I would argue Rhane and Gattis both appear to be good young coordinators who should have a lot of success going forward.
