I stumbled upon this 2016 movie starring Ricky Gervais (written and produced, as well) with Eric Bana. I would imagine this is how TV news gets made today.

The plot isn't that deep so this won't be too much of a spoiler. Eric and Ricky are a news crew who kind of embellish things for a small radio news outlet in NYC. There is a revolt in Ecuador and they do a report on it. It is so popular the boss sends them to Ecuador. But leaving for the airport, things get screwed up and they can't go. So they decide to do the reports from a rented apartment across the street from the studio above a Mexican restaurant. Of course, they get deeper and deeper into the ruse and hilarity ensues.
