Yes, a really great owner, and community leader. Just like his dad.

By contrast, I wonder what the good citizens of Oakland (or, for that matter, Las Vegas) will be saying on the day that Mark Davis shuffles off this mortal coil.

I've said through the years that I was not a fan of the Rooneys after Art died. I've given my reasons and this is neither the time or place to belabor them. I do recognize and appreciate Dan's place in Pittsburgh and NFL history and I am saddened by his loss. May he rest in peace.

I have disagreements with the way Art III does business, but today all I have is love, respect, and sadness for him, and everyone in the family, and all across Steeler Nation, and in fact, for the sport of American football at large.

Everyone lost a great man today.

There aren't many - if any - owners left in professional sports who command respect to the level of Mr. Rooney. And now that the league is left to the likes of Jerry Jones and Robert Kraft...well, it's a sad day for the sport.

Sitting here tonight embarking on 10 days off, Cabernet in hand, realizing that tonight I shed a tear for only the third time in my life for the loss of a sports figure. And then I realized that I did not shed a tear for them merely because they were great at their sport but because they were great at life.

Roberto Walker Clemente
Joseph Vincent Paterno
Daniel Milton Rooney

The EXACT same three for me.

I have great respect for you, and CF LION, and I will not question your feelings on Dan Rooney's passing. I will say that I also shed a tear for Roberto and Joe, but I don't hold Dan in the same esteem. I will leave it at that for now. I am saddened by his death, but at some future time I may start a thread to discuss Dan's legacy. I don't view him in the same way as many here, especially Pittsburgh fans. For now, I offer my sympathy to his family and pray he rests in peace.

fair, I'm sure you have good reason for your position on this. I've always admired the Rooney family. My daughter attended Duquesne (Several Rooneys including Dan attended). My daughter was president of a service sorority at Duquesne and met Dan through service projects with the Steelers. She thought very highly of him.

Not a Steelers fan, but always respected how the Rooneys ran their team and how they treated ND alum Rocky Bleier after he was drafted and wounded in Vietnam.

RIP Dan Rooney

It's nothing sordid or illegal. Just business. In a nutshell, Joe and Roberto were givers. Dan is more of a taker in my eyes. But, I'll leave this for another time.

Meh, I don't see it. The stadium issue? Sure, he played hardball, but it was nothing compared to what other owners would have done. And it pales next to the good he did for the community, for minorities in sports, hell, for any number of things.

Was it something else that turned you off? If so, you may have a legit beef; your points here are typically solid. That said, you're right, now's not the time to get into it.

Yes. Another time, and I am open to other views. I have no doubt, based upon what I have seen on the Pittsburgh stations so far, that the Pope will be asked to canonize him before years end.;)
