RIP David Bowie

Crazy. Just a month after Scott Weiland died, who proclaimed his life-ling idol was none other than Bowie.

Cancer blows.

Just a huge figure. Even if you weren't a fan, you still knew it was David F. Bowie. I hope your spine can now recover from that mellow-thighed chick.R.I.P.

Shocking news - was looking forward to digging into his new album (which was getting great reviews, and of course, being praised as another effort where Bowie 'reinvented' himself) soon. Really huge blow to the art world - he could literally do it all - write, perform, act, paint; and everything was so effortless for him. I can't say I'm surprised at how low key he was about his battle with cancer - everything he did was dignified and on his terms; from his long marriage to Iman, to his music, to his refusal to be labeled. Will certainly miss his art and treasure the legacy he's left behind. RIP David Bowie, née Jones.

I was lucky enough to see two of my idols perform together back in the 90's when he and Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) went on tour. It was in support of Bowie's 'Outside' album, which was this sort of industrial/synth pop concept album that I listened to over and over and over. And I'll never forget his standout cameo in Twin Peaks, or his turn as Jareth, the Goblin King.

Agree.
This is a pretty cool concert he did where people either called in or emailed him the songs they wanted him to play.
He was very cool and seemed like a great guy to have a few with.

For me it would be like "Sophie's Choice" I could'nt pick one. I was a big fan of almost everything he did, except for Tin Machine.

Totally agree....for me, aside from Lennon & Harrison, the first of my childhood heros to die. I mean ones that I considered youthful. Not sure why I always picture him as young but I did. Regardless, a bit of a shock. He also seemed to be, at least after he matured, like a good dude. he had a long and successful marriage to Iman. I really enjoyed a long interview he did in Playboy a long, long time ago.

I recall playing "Major Tom" on my kitchen table on an old record player with my dad reading the newspaper, drinking coffee...he was "nonplused". I remember watching him to see if he had a reaction.

Also, nobody has mentioned the song "Fame" which was pretty groundbreaking at the time.

Wow. This feels like a punch in the gut. Don't forget to say hello to John and George.

I could do without the "glam" he made so popular. Took rock down a wrong path with that one. Great music, though.

I remember Sound Commission playing Suffrigette City at jammies and falling in love with that song. One of my favorite songs ever!

Another big loss for the music world. RIP David

A bit surprising he lived as long as he did. Had a 4 pack of cigarette a day habit during the 70's, he should probably have died a long time ago. Has so many memorable songs.

And probably could have made acting a full time gig if he wanted to - his portrayal of Andy Warhol in 'Basquiat' was spot on perfect.

Amazing he could keep a 18 month battle with cancer quiet the whole time. In this world there are no secrets...surprised no one leaked it out.

Loved Changes as we all go through them and its best to embrace them.

He was much more than a singer, writer, actor to many of his generation. At first, I didn't liked his glam act because I thought it was just to get attention sorta like Madonna. But it was much more and symbolized thumbing your nose at the Establishment, daring to be different, going your own way. He challenged people to look at conventions and themselves. But he lived that style and it inspired millions other to follow their instincts and live life as they desired. Very influential, for better or worse.

A great man who lived a great life. RIP

I saw the Ziggy Stardust tour in 1973 at the Tower Theater. He had the greatest entrance onstage that I've ever seen, coming on with strobe lights while "Ode To Joy" was being played, and the opening up with "Hang on to Yourself".
