Russia and Drugs

Only because I don't believe we will ever stop it, all we can do is find bits of humor in these reports.

- Two womens hockey players tested positive for male DNA? it is either a swapped sample with a guy, or they really are men. Which makes you more uncomfortable?
- The former president of WADA is Dick Pound? Really? He cannot possibly go by Dick. Rich, Richard, whatever, but i'm not buying that one.

As long as they are in Russia and I am here, neither makes me uncomfortable. Tying point 1 and point 2 together does make me uncomfortable.
I actually know a Richard Johnson. He goes by Richard.

As to the OP, the fact that no one anywhere is surprised by the scope and severity of the problem speaks volumes. The real interesting issue with this will be the Olympic committee reaction to it over the coming months. Let's see how close to FIFA the Olympic movement has become in the scope of its corruption and anti-sports decision making process.

How can an entire country's culture get off on cheating ?

I don't get it.

At the end of the day, as a competitor wouldn't you want to win fair & square?

I'm probably being naive - most likely the government is pumping atheletes full of these drugs and suggesting dire consequences if the athletes do not comply.

Yeah, that's exactly what's going on -- plus huge incentives for winning, and the whole national pride thing.

It's also conceivable that the athletes don't know everything they're taking ... Not all PEDs are injected. Trainer hands you a protein shake, you gonna ask him if it's the usual testicle-shrinking cocktail today?

If a government is corrupt enough or unfair enough for long enough, then a large part of the people and culture will start to believe that nothing is fair in the world, and everyone else is also cheating, and if I don't also cheat then I'm a dummy, and the only thing that matters is whether you get caught. For example, I read that in Greece close to all the people think they should cheat on their taxes if they could get away with it.
