Ryan Day and Justin Fields

I was just saying the same thing to my old man. People are assuming Ohio St will be great because they have been under Urban.

There’s lots of talent there, but as we saw under Fickell, coaching and QB play really matters.

I think Day will be fine, certainly has big shoes and a monster ego to fill. He won’t be Urby on the upside but he certainly won’t be Harbaugh on the downside either.

Fields also has big shoes to fill and he won’t fill them, end of story. Personally I hope he falls flat on his face and/or flat on his butt for two reasons: his commitment/de-commitment to PSU and his gaming the system to acquire immediate eligibility and not having to sit out a year. (And yes, I blame the NCAA as the enabler, too.)

I’m along the same lines. I mean don’t get me wrong, they have good players because of the urban recruiting prowess but to try to say that because they played great for the games that urban was suspended last year is fools gold. urban was only suspended for the games so that wasn’t Day running practices and installing the game plan. It was all urban. The guy is unproven and he’s got an essentially freshman QB with a weak OL. If you look more than skin deep, I have no idea why there’s so much love for them

I don't think their OL would be considered weak. A bit unproven, but not weak. Remember that an All-B1G OL came in from Rutgers as a grad transfer and is running with the ones.

I agree with others about the overhype of Fields. He has yet to prove himself as a passer.

Interesting year in the B1G East division. Everyone has question marks.

Please repeat your comments on Fields in three years.
Funny that Jake Fromh (sp) and Justin Fields on QB1 in consecutive years.

I think part of the reason they are getting so much love is their schedule. Their OOC schedule this year is the weakest that I can remember. Not bashing them because they typically play a really tough OOC opponent each year, but that's not the case this year. Their entire season hinges on Fields.

Why would he repeat those comments in 3 years? The thread is about 2019 oh-high-ya level of play, and the transition of the oh-high-ya coaching staff. Regardless as to how Fields plays this year he could be an AA in 3 years, or be at his 4th team. Who knows. If he has a bad game and gets benched he may walk right off the field and pack his bags.

But the excessive hype for his level of play in 2019 is just not justified.

that OL transfer is a symptom of what I am really starting to hate about college football

dude was a captain at Rutgres....now the rich get richer and don't have to worry about OL they are recruiting and bringing through the system because they can just shop around and slap a ready made all B1G starter in there

Grad transfers are one thing.....but the NCAA allowing all these other transfers left and right is pathetic, absolutely pathetic.

Yep, they have opened pandora's box. If one players makes up a line of B.S. and the NCAA buys it, like with fields, how can they deny any player immediate eligibility? I was reading where a top 15 DE recruit, I believe, just left GA for FL. Why shouldn't he be eligible immediately when Fields walked away after his freshman season to seek a better situation and was granted immediate eligibility?

The NCAA is ruining college football.

I agree, but that is hand the NCAA has dealt.

Read an article today that neither Fields or Houck (UK grad transfer in) have separated themselves according to OSU Head Coach Ryan Day.

More worried about Michigan than OSU this year. I think Pry will have a great game plan vs. OSU. Would imagine stop the RUN, then stop the potential running QB (assuming Fields) with a very fast, ferocious linebacker. Mix up the coverages and have nice blitz packages and we will be fine...I think that game our O has to be more careful and conservative. Field position will be key obviously as it always is-but I think if Pry and his boys handle their bizness we are in a good spot. Michigan will be interesting...

I think he was kicked off UGA for rules violations...

Interesting approach. You would think with the story it took to get him there and eligible, they'd coddle him and name him starter immediately. Perhaps Day knows he isn't going anywhere and is portraying the battle as tougher than it really is. Hell, no way this transfer QB is magically better than he was holding the clipboard behind the UK QB last year. Right?

It's some kind of BS. And teams don't tend to downplay what they have since...Paterno?...

Well, also Sean Clifford is in a battle for the starting job too. That’s coach speak, no way fields isn’t the starter.

yep that is the way that they want it apparently

but I don't have to like it

I agree with what someone else said in the thread, the NCAA is killing college football....for me....not speaking for other fans

I think that Day will be fine, but I wouldn’t be shocked that there could be some growing pains along the way with him. I also wouldn’t be shocked if Cincinnati went in there and surprised OSU. I don’t doubt his Offensive acumen, but his team management could cost them a game or 2.

With Fields, I don’t get it. He wasn’t great this spring, basically outplayed in the spring game by the other QB who just transferred. My guess is that he had a reality check at UGA, and just couldn’t understand how he didn’t win the position over Fromm. Look at the video of him walking off the field and making comments about his lack of playing time to his teammates.

My guess is that he’s never really had to work hard to win a position battle and so he just expects to have the job and it just doesn’t work that way it big time D-1 programs. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see him struggle this year. Ultimately he will probably be a really good College QB and be drafted, but the second coming of Cam Newton, let’s just slow it down.

It will be interesting to see. If their passing game isn’t consistent, could be a long season.

..

Yep, I believe it was marijuana possession which GA team rules dictate a 1 game suspension. But that may not impact the NCAA in what now seems like anything goes transfer eligibility.... and FL may not have those same team rules. Just like the team rule at GA was playing the incumbent starter and not the cocky true freshman, the team rule at oh-high-ya may be playing the cocky Soph transfer and not other QB's that may perform better in practice.... Who knows...

That OL transfer appears to be Jonah Jackson, a low rated 2 Star. 5.3 from the 2015 class. Had 2 offers: Rutgers, and Monmouth. You can never tell how some of these young OL recruits will pan out.
