Saturday 8PM CNN - A Deadly Haze

Agree with most of the posts. From the CNN Special Report..."his murder leads to one of the largest criminal indictments in history......" From what I've read from the media's preliminary hearing reports, there is quite a bit more to the story and actions of all then has been reported.

Did I read your post correctly? They (CNN) are calling Piazza’s death murder?

I’ve never heard of anyone that has ever been “required” to drink alcohol. And how about the alcohol he consumed after the event? Was he “required” to drink that too?
I have. Imagine that you are 18 years old and 10 weeks into a grueling pledge program and you have 40 brothers surrounding you telling you to drink. Are you going to walk away from that? It's not a simple as you think.

A Deadly Haze: Inside the Fraternity Crisis

An in-depth look at the tragic and gruesome fraternity death of 19 year-old Penn State University student Tim Piazza; his murder leads to one of the largest criminal indictments in history against a fraternity and its members.

So tragic

I agree. Peer pressure can be powerful, especially for someone that young and still has what is known as an adolescent brain. People that age don’t have the same decision making abilities thet they will have when they’re older. One of the big problems with the “adoloescent brain” is a lack of contemplating consequences for their actions. It’s a very much “in the moment” way of thinking. Do some general/light reading on the asolescent brain - it’s very interesting to say the least and explains some of the really dumb things kids that age do.

I doubt it. but even if they did, what relevance does that have? Your post just oozes bigotry. You ought to be embarrassed by it.

Par for the course for Thyrsty, UncleLar. Yet he's allowed to continue posting. Frankly, he held back a bit in his description.

Lets face it, the JS scandal has put a huge target sign on PSU.

At what point do innocent people stop getting kicked in the pants over the actions of a few criminals? When does the smearing of an institution and town reach an attempt to destroy the value of a degree and the economy of a town? This media trash should be met with the outrage it deserves.

To be honest, a PSU fraternity pledge died at a PSU fraternity act where he was required to drink large amounts of alcohol. Not like you can really argue about what happened which is different that arguing about legal, ethical and moral responsibility. Yes hazing happens everywhere as does alcohol abuse by college students.

As tragic as that death was at PSU, I heard that 13 students have committed suicide at the University of Pennsylvania in the past 5 years, deaths that could have been prevented, but there has been virtually no press about this sad situation. Why do think that is?

Piazza's death was tragic by any standard, but the fact that CNN has used the term "murder" to describe it, even though lesser charges of manslaughter and endangerment have twice been dismissed, is pretty indicative of the perspective this story will no doubt adopt. The fact that Sarah Ganim and SPM are participating in this report likewise tells you all you need to know.

I’ve been in many situations involving peer pressure....sometimes I went along and sometimes I left. It’s called free will. I’m quite sure if I was expected to do something completely ridiculous, I would walk away. If 40 of your brothers were standing around expecting you to stab yourself with a knife, would you do it? I’m not endangering my life needlessly for anyone....at that point I would say f*#k the fraternity.

Like I said. It's not as simple as you think, especially when you are 18.

Your analogy of stabbing yourself is not the same as being told to drink something. Taking a few drinks seems harmless (stabbing is obviously not). Once you are drunk, you don't realize that continuing to drink is potentially very harmful.

These are two different things, suicide and hazing . And I don’t believe it’s necessarily that easy to prevent suicide . I’ll guess that there might be different types of attempts.
I have heard that jumping in front of a train is the most successful way to attempt suicide. So unless you saw the cases studied each add I don’t see how you can come to that conclusion.
It’s pretty well established that excessive alcohol consumption can kill you or be a factor in accidental deaths.
If you add up all the alcohol related injuries up to and including deaths and looked at suicide attempts and their related injuries and deaths , I’ll guess alcohol is a larger problem number wise.

You think because they have a website that it is an official part of the university? Why isn't their domain on psu.edu?

Take a step back and think about your position, why are you so desperate to make a closer affiliation between frats (an outdated concept) and my alma mater? Why does it matter so much that you are spending time trying to convince me that frats are an official part of PSU?
Are they a university organization or not? It’s a simple question an easily answered . You just refuse to see it.

With everything out there about the dangers of alcohol these days, you would have to live in a cave to not know drinking that much can be harmful. I get what you’re saying, but at some point people have to make good decisions and if they don’t, it’s a tragedy but ultimately their own fault.

We'll agree to disagree.

Bigotry? I thought it referenced the time Sara Ganim and Stacey Parks Miller were posting pics and talking about going on another vacation together.

You are speaking from the point of view of an experienced adult. How was your decision making at age 18? I can tell you that I made some pretty bad decisions, especially when alcohol was involved, and I'm not an outlier.

We'll agree to disagree.

Alcohol is bigger annually on college campuses when you add up total injuries and deaths ( suicide has more overall fatalities) . If we expand it to the general population alcohol causes much more overall damage and deaths because we get into the long term thing.

Both are obviously serious issues though.

I hope they pin the blame right where it belongs - at misguided University policies that have worked about as well as gun free zones. Draft beer ONLY at fraternities from here on out. Next problem?

But this is Our Sara and SPM we're talking about here, so...

I made some bad decisions too, but they were my decisions. I also know that if one of those bad decisions would have killed me, my parents wouldn’t have been suing anyone. There used to be accountability for one’s actions...now it’s about blaming someone else.

At least someone around here understood my post. That Uncle Lar isn't the brightest bulb in the pack, but he is marginally more intelligent than ThePennsyOrifice. :)

Sometimes decisions are greatly influenced by outside factors. You said you never heard of someone forced to drink. Perhaps if you haven't been in that position before, you can't understand how it is possible. I guarantee that it has been happening at a lot of fraternties for a long time.

Still waiting for your answer on the second question I posed...

Agree Mt Nittany. The decision to ban kegs was a very poor decision....
I'll take it a step further - the University should be BUYING 3.2% kegs for dorm socials every Fall. This is how you learn to drink responsibly. Not by sneaking around a ban w/ hard liquor.

I don’t see how this case was murder by any stretch of the imagination, but I’m not a lawyer.

Yes, snorkeling as I recall, or was it deep sea diving, oh never mind...

Baloney. There is no way to interpret your comment that they have a “unique relationship” wherein SG is the “male” and SPM is the “female” other than a not so thinly disguised slap at their sexuality, which has zero relevance to this discussion. For one thing, lots of friends, myself included, go on vacation with other single friends, without there being anything the least bit sexual about it. For another, even if they had a sexual relationship, what does that have to do with the CNN report? Absolutely nothing. It's a bigoted remark, pure and simple.

You have no idea what that phrase means . I hope you don’t have a job that doesn’t . require decisions greater than asking people about super sizing.
They are associated with penn state . They are part of the IFC. The university can sanction them . They participate in university sponsored events .
Your obvious weaseling just shows how obtuse you are.
You’re one of the dumbest alleged college graduates ( I find that doubtful ) I’ve encountered on this short bus of a website.

Stop moving the goal posts, are they an OFFICIAL part of the university?

Pro tip, when you insult someone's intelligence, you should try not to have your post be riddled with basic English errors.

Emphasis . And I’m not arguing that fraternities have no university affiliation.

No one is arguing that. I'm very clearly saying that frats are not an OFFICIAL part of the university. You, for some reason you won't admit, are adamantly (and unsuccessfully) arguing otherwise.

Apparently it’s called A Deadly Haze. I’ll correct the title. I just can’t believe that she is once again going after Penn State...because, you know, hazing doesn’t happen anywhere else.

She has to go after PSU. Its the only way that talentless hack can get any attention.

On a somewhat related topic, do you and your single vacation friends ever shower and hug each other? If so, is it done with sexual intent or just in a creepy, overly affectionate way? Thanks in advance.
:)

Clearly you missed their messages and pictures or you wouldn't be clinging to your stance. Nothing he posted was an inaccurate description. Of course, what you really are failing to address is why a prosecutor and small time reporter who has reported a lot of mysterious leaks are hanging out in the first place, unless you want to make the argument that prosecutors and reporters go on vacations all the time.

I don't care what the pictures showed. This is my stance on the issue.
