He may have been the best all around player ever. Williams was a better hitter. Aaron hit more home runs. But when it came to doing it all...hitting for average, hitting for power, running, fielding, and throwing...it can be argued that no one was better. HAPPY BIRTHDAY WILLIE!!

Well said fairg. He could hit for average, he could hit for power, he could run, he could throw and he could field. He lost nearly two full years in '52 and '53 to military service otherwise he may well of broken Babe Ruth's record of 714 lifetime home runs. Greatest all-around baseball player ever.

I love the fact that he would play stickball with the kids on the streets of New York.

Happy Birthday Say Hey!

If you have an opportunity to watch that play in its entirety, the falling away, off balance pirouetting throw back into the infield is almost as remarkable as the catch. Willie worked as a bricklayer before his playing days and his hands, wrists and forearms were tremendously strong giving him exceptional power for a player of average height and weight.

Best all around hitter: Ruth
Best power hitter: Ruth, Aaron
Best hitter for average: Cobb (.367 lifetime!)
Best fielder: Mays
Best arm: Mays, Clemente
Best base runner: Cobb
Best all around player: Mays
Most underrated player by today's fans: Honus Wagner, who was both a great hitter and a great fielder at SS the most important fielding position
Most overrated player by today's fans: Pete Rose (.303, 160 HRs, mediocre fielder)

Since you used the phrase "Best all around hitter" I will defer to Ruth. At a quick glance, I can't disagree with the rest.

Not sure I'd give Mays the "best fielding" award. Best fielding *outfielder* I can see. But infielders take more chances. And I'd put Mike Schmidt in the discussion, at least, for best all-around player, given how tough third base can be.

That's a decent summation. I originally saw your post as part of someone's reply and was ready to respond in righteous indignation until I found your original post and saw the props you gave Wagner.

Fair enough re Mays, I was thinking outfielders only.
Agree Schmidt is underrrated (except by most Phillies fans).
