Lots of hype for '23. Both early guesstimates that I've seen had Georgia, Alabama, as 1,2. Both had Michigan and Ohio St as 3,4.

Assuming we don't crap the bed against WVU and an early year, high-intensity game, next year may look like this year. By that I mean we have two mega-games versus UM and tOSU. After that, we've got a lot of mediocre games where we should be highly favored.

It seems that the case of 2 or 3 big games applies to many teams but those that create these preseason rankings don't ever learn from their preseason biases, affiliations and addictions.

Wouldn't it be special if once in a while an entities preseason rankings actually resembled that the upcoming seasons post season rankings?

That would require study and resultant knowledge from study of each and every team in the pool and some risky analytics and accurate projections. Not gonna happen even in these days of the portal.

I mean that's most top team's isn't it? How many teams play more than two top 10 teams in the regular season?

Michigan has us and OSU. Their OOC is Bowling Green, East Carolina and UNLV. Their crossover games are Purdue, Nebraska and Minnesota.

UGA has an awful schedule. Tennessee is their only conference game against a team that finished with fewer than 5 losses They don't play bama or lsu. OOC is UT Martin, Ball State UAB and Georgia Tech.

Bama has LSU and Tenn. Doesn't play UGA. Miss State is the only other team on their schedule that finished with fewer than 5 losses this season (4). Their ooc is Texas (finished 8-5), USF, Chattanooga, Middle Tenn.

You sir are spot on. Posters gave PSU grief this year because auburn was down, they didn't know Minnesota would finish the year ranked, Purdue would be in the big 10 championship game, they didn't know Ohio was a 10 win team, and they didn't know both Michigan and Ohio St were playoff teams. Even Maryland that we beat 30-0 ended 8-5 and almost beat Ohio St.

What other top 10 team played 2 playoff teams, and a 3rd top 10 team in their bowl?

The bottom line is that most top teams aren't playing a tougher schedule. Very few in fact.

And some would like to argue the merits of why beating ranked 4 and 5 loss teams is more impressive than unranked 4-5 loss teams.

I love the idiotic refrain well they were top 10 when we played them. Why, because they play in the ESPN conference or their new coach was a genius that bought into the off the wall failed idea that you could scrap a whole team and replace it with mercenary portal transfers. Lol USC. If you played these bozos early to mid season you played one of the many mythical top 10 teams. Where are they now?

I had a journalism class where the prof asked each student what his major was at the onset of our first class. When done, he asked all the 'Sport Journalism' majors to transfer to another class such as mythology as that was more apropo to there future profession.

Cracked me up. It was a great class btw.

You're almost never going to get more than 1-2 shots in the regular season at teams that finish the season ranked in the top 10.

The final AP poll of the regular season the top 10 combined for 12 losses. 6 of the final top ten didn't beat any teams on their schedule that finished in the top 10. The 4 teams that did combined for 5 meaning the remaining 7 losses were "bad losses" to teams that finished ranked outside the top 10.

The only teams that even played multiple teams that finished in the final top 10 were the big ten east trio.

If Bama beats Tennessee then Tennessee probably finishes outside the top ten and bama still has no top ten wins.

How about top 25 teams? Or does that hurt your argument?

top ten wins is what franklin gets skewered on, and what the comment I responded to was referencing, so that's what I went with. feel free to pull top 25.

I know you have a hard on for those 20-25th ranked wins against 4 and 5 loss teams so should be a fun exercise for you.

We both know what that chart looks like. The key is we didn't beat any good teams this year unlike the rest of the top 10. Not Franklin's fault--he did exactly what he should have in the wins--he beat them, typically, with ease

Which isn't what I was responding to but feel free to start your own thread on the topic.

Illinois away early in the season scares me.

Every top 10 team from the final AP poll and the number of regular season losses for each one of their wins.

*Note, half the big ten teams would have one fewer loss if the conference played 8 conference games and an fcs team like the SEC does, or half the SEC schools would have an additional loss if they played an extra SEC game in lieu FCS gams

By default rank stays pretty much the same as the end of season polls with some adjustment for returning/lost starters. Of course it's completely meaningless because every year unranked teams like PSU end up in the top 10.

I don't see Iowa and Illinois and possibly Michigan State as mediocre games. Each could easily be a top 15 team when we play them. We don't play in the ACC Coastal!

Agreed.

Bielema has turned Illinois around, and they're going to be super-primed for that conference opener in Champaign. (Thanks, worthless Big Suck.)

We get Iowa the very next week...at home, granted, but far from a walk-over. As bad as their offense was this season, they still finished with 8 wins to include a pummeling of Kentucky in their bowl game.

As for Michigan State, who knows, but the game is at their place, and even though last season was a disaster for them, the expectation is they'll be back on the football map in 2023.

I have no idea what to expect from West Virginia, but they're usually legit.

Bottom line: the 2023 schedule is no walk in the park and actually tougher than that of most other pre-season top-10 teams. Add to that the fact our major question mark is at the most important position.

After Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan the Big Ten very much the ACC Coastal. None of those teams have any shot to finish in the top 15. Iowa is the only other Big Ten team that might be ranked to start the year.

Don’t worry, every one of those teams we happen to beat will suddenly become terrible teams as judged by some posters on here.

Yup, that's Lando's story and he's sticking to it...right down to the statement that the Rose Bowl win is meaningless...even though the "meaning" is crystal clear to anyone actually a fan of the team.

I'm not the only Penn State fan here or anyone else that accept the reality of meaning of bowl games. You keep mentioning me by name when a you're doing is confirming you don't comprehend how the game has changed. The final polls support by game about our quality wins being nonexistent this year. Sorry.

With no quality wins, on what basis did the AP choose PSU #7?

That we beat the teams we should have with ease and our 2 losses were to top 5 teams.
We don't have a win over a ranked team in the regular season. Fact not opinion.

But since bowl games are meaningless, how did PSU go from 11 to 7?
Because they're required to vote again using the bowl games. This last poll means nothing. The final regular season poll is all that matters. Unfortunately the voters were idiots and had teams like Clemson ahead of us then.

Soon we'll have a real playoff and you'll all suddenly stop caring about the bowls.

Lando, my man, I wasn't aware that I mentioned you all that much by name. But if the shoe fits.

The fact is, your oft-repeated line about the Rose Bowl being meaningless has been proven to be dead wrong. On the contrary, it was a big and important win. Surely you can man admit that now.

Well, we can agree to disagree. I think Iowa, Wisconsin, maybe even Minnesota would win the ACC Coastal year after year. We would dominate the ACC Coastal and finish undefeated every year prior to the annual contest with Clemson for the bid to the final 4. The ACC Coastal is total garbage.

How was it proven wrong? It wasn't a big or an important win. Our season was already over and it means nothing for next year. I'm still thrilled that we were 10-2 and how we beat the teams we should have. Hopefully next year we take the next step and beat Ohio State and/or Michigan but beating Utah meant nothing.

Right now the Big Ten West = ACC Coastal. When Alvarez was at Wisconsin maybe. Iowa is hit or miss. How many times has the Big Ten East winner lost to the Big Ten West winner in the B10 CCG?

We would dominate the ACC Coastal but I'd much rather play Ohio State and Michigan each year. I'm not looking to play 12 cupcakes. We already play too many.

Must really bother Ohio St fans that PSU finished top 10 with the same number of wins over top 10 teams as them except we closed strong and they went out with a whimper losers of their last 2 games.

I couldn't say for certain. But clearly both fan bases have their fair share of lunatics.
