Seth is the #1 seed @ 285 at the 2018 CIF State Wrestling Championships.

It appears that the CIF Championships are being shown on Flo, for those that are subscribers.

About half the competitors @ 285, including Seth, have a bye in R1.

In R2 (Round of 32), Seth will face Edgar Valdez (Arroyo)

Another kid to watch at CA states is Jesse Vasquez at 132 lbs. Only a sophomore but one of the best kids in the country. Lost a close one to Joey Silva at Ironman I believe. Grew a ton between his freshman and sophomore seasons and looks like a huge 132. I bet he ends up at 157 in college. He is probably my favorite high school kid to watch.

Seth by pin in 1st period. Takedown and 2 back followed by a tilt and pin at 1:26

Nevill's with the first period pin (about 34 seconds remaining). Took him down off camera; turned him. Out of bounds, then turned him with an arm bar again for back points and the pin. Quick work and sporting dyed blond hair.

In R3 (round of 16), he pinned Kaleb Abernathy (Centennial), at 1:26

In R4 (quarterfinals), he'll face Xavier Moran (Selma)

say it again this year....I admire CA for only having one division. when some of these states have 3,4 and more divisions. the fact they havent broken from tradition is pretty cool.

If PA followed that model imagine the awesome matches we could be treated to

Nevills with the takedown, ride and pin at 1:22 of the first period. Into the semifinals. Two wins away from being only the third wrestler in California history to win 4 state championships ... before he moves on next year to join his brother at PSU.

In R5 (semis), he'll face Randy Gonzales, Jr. (Lakewood). Gonzales has also pinned his way to the semis, though he did it one more time than Seth, as he had a R1 match.

285 POUNDS: In the land of the heavyweights, there’s Seth Nevills (Clovis, Sr.) and then the rest of the field! Nevills is scheduled this weekend to become only the third wrestler in the boy’s division to win his fourth consecutive state championship – joining an incredibly exclusive duo of four-timers in Darrell Vasquez (Bakersfield, 2002) and former teammate Justin Mejia (Clovis, 2017). He is also looking to win an unprecedented ninth overall state title for the Nevills clan, following titles by older brothers Zach, Nick, and AJ. Keep in mind the Penn State-bound Nevills has never lost to a CA competitor and it’ll require a truly seismic upset of historical proportions for any wrestler to top Nevills this weekend, let alone survive a full six minutes against him. A phenomenal wrestler on his feet, Nevills could go down as one of the best upper weight wrestlers in our state’s history. Close behind and a strong contender to reach the finals is returning state medalist and two-time Cadet All-American Jake Levengood (Vacaville, Sr.), who is undefeated against CA competition this year. The Southern Section has a trio of excellent wrestlers that will be more than ready to challenge for the medal stand. They include champion Tony DaCosta (Torrance, Sr.), runner-up Josh Tarango(Canyon, Sr.) who is making his state debut, and two-time state qualifier Randy Gonzalez Jr.(Lakewood). Nicholas Villarreal (Gilroy, So) is a two-time Central Coast champion and looks ready to make a run at the title after coming up short last season. As the weight class is often quite unpredictable, any number of different wrestlers can find themselves on the medal podium on Saturday night. Central Coast runner-up and two-time state qualifier Anthony Gomez (Christopher, Sr.) looks ready for a deep run, as well as Central runner-up Xavier Moran (Selma, Sr.), who’s also making his second trip to state. Keep an eye on San Diego champion Andrew Johnson (Poway, So.), Mike Jeffus (Turlock, Jr.), and Daniel Garcia (Hesperia, Sr.).

That wording is awesome. Scheduled to become? They might as well not even wrestle the matches.

Given that fact, it is kind of interesting to note though that several of CA's four timers, and multiple time state champs, didn't really pan out as we'd expect at the collegiate level, given how seemingly tough it would be to win more than one state title in that state. You'd almost expect them to dominate everyone in college.

Maybe Gulibon, Marstellar, et al., not from California, show that the jump to Div 1 is not easy?

Yes, as well as many more. Being that you mentioned Guilbon, I can't help but think of Nathan Galloway as well. He never seemed to come into his own until his senior year.

I think he is both slightly bigger and better than big bro. Maybe Gable will be the class of the class for the next 4-5 years but we have done well to get him a perennial top 4.
