Football Seven Nittany Lions invited to NFL Combine

No Clifford is a kick in the nuts. I guess they didn't see who was throwing the ball to Hamler, Dotson, Tinsley, and Washington. Must have been a fluke.
I didn't even realize that. Ouch. He certainly deserves to be invited. Shocking to me that he was not.

It is shocking. He absolutely deserves an invite. Not that his entire career was a highlight reel but he did finish with the highest passer rating of any of the QBs in the bowls games and lead his team to a #7 ranking.
Agree. Aidan O'Connell got an invitation. (and he beat out the potential overall number-one pick from Kentucky!)

So, according to NFL....the guy from Division II Sheppard is a better QB than Clifford? I just saw the list an right now today will say that Clifford will have a longer NFL Career than:

Bagent
Bennett
Cuningham
Hall
Levis
McKee
O'Connell
Rchardson

Using NFLdraftbuzz yes, but there are probably at least 100 guys on their list above him who are not leaving college. If you page through, you'll even see some PSU guys above him that have announced their return.
I am not a huge SC fan and don't see a path to being a starting QB. having said that, a rating that low doesn't make sense. He was a four year starter and delivered results for 2022. Hard to believe someone wouldn't take a 'Purdy' type of flier on that.

Exactly, I am not saying he is Aaron Rodgers.....but did anyone see how bad Josh Johnson was in the NFC Playoff Game. Yet he still gets chances.....

How do players get invited to the Combine you ask?

A: Front office members from various NFL teams join the directors of the National and BLESTO scouting services to form the committee with the intent of inviting every player who will get selected in that year's draft.

Clifford not being selected means that NFL teams don't see him as somebody they would use a draft pick on.

Regarding Clifford, he doesn’t have the arm talent for the NFL. At the highest level, a QB must be able to make all of the throws. He just can’t make them. He’s a solid D-I quarterback in a read option system. He’s athletic, has above average speed for the position and is an effective scrambler.

I don't think anyone is saying he is Josh Allen....but have you seen some of the back-ups in this league? Again, Josh Johnson had no clue what he was doing. He is worse than that?

Josh Johnson has been in the NFL since 2008. Clifford finished his 6th season in college. Josh is an even better athlete than Clifford. He’s taller, heavier and noticeably faster. He runs a 4.44 forty.
Johnson may be a perennial backup, but you don’t last that long in the NFL even as a backup, unless you bring something to the table.

Well he certainly didn’t bring anything to the table in the NFC Championship Game. Somewhat surprised that Clifford didn’t get an invite but he probably gets signed as an undrafted free agent. We’ll see

Yeah, that’s looking to be what happens with Clifford. He’s going to get into a camp or two and tryout. Hopefully, he can make a roster spot.

Tell me what he brings to the table, because I didn't see it.

Heck, McGloin actually started in the NFL.

Can't convince me Cliff doesn't deserve to go to combine.

Maybe he deserves to go. NFL teams make mistakes evaluating talent every year. I think his ability is more for the CFL. I think one of the teams already has the rights to Clifford if he wants to play up north. I can’t remember which one off the top of my head though.

Yes, he'll get a chance and I predict he'll make a teams roster. He may still yet get drafted, but FA may be better as he'll have a bit of a choice in selecting which team. Sticking with that team into September may be an issue but I'd take a bet that he is on a team by the end of the season.

That would be cool.

I suspect Sean will be just fine. I expect to see him on tv soon. He’s very bright and articulate. He’ll survive. I respect what he did at psu and expect he’ll succeed

Exactly. He still might play in the NFL or CFL. If pro football doesn’t work out, he always has the NIL business he can fall back on.

I agree. My son played college baseball with a guy who reminds me of Sean. Good player that got where he was more on hard work than natural talent…loved the game and wanted to keep playing….didn’t get drafted, but ended up playing minor league for the Yankees for a short stint. He now works in the front office for the Yankees and he’s loving life. I can see something like that for Sean.

My son also. Played college baseball and was being scouted by the pirates and cards. Suffered a back injury but parlayed a great college education into an upper management job in the tech field. Sometimes you’re better off

McSorley was/is clearly a better QB than Clifford.
You saw how Trace has done
Clifford would have no shot.

McSorley was a better QB than Levis as well, but Levis is projected as a #1 pick, so I guess you never know.

How many tears are you going to shed when Will goes in the top 10? Be honest.

I won’t shed one. I wish him well. The nfl is a meat grinder way more than college. He has struggled staying healthy as has Clifford. Even at Kentucky he was often a run first guy. He has enormous tools but the nfl is a different level. We will see

No one "deserves" an invite. Clifford is far from a lock to be drafted. There's tons of film on him and scouts want to see other guys. It's not an insult or a slap in the face. Also, doesn't mean he can't be drafted.

McSorley was not a better QB when looking at NFL attributes. And, yes, you fully understand "why" you just disagree with the assessment. There's a difference.

Relocated from MD to WV late last year and saw Bagent play several times last fall. He's a bigger version of McSorley with a bigger arm, and a real playmaker. He holds the record for most career TD passes across all levels of the NCAA. He won the Harlon Hill trophy (DII Heisman) his junior year was 3rd last fall. Not comparing him to SC, just agree that he deserved an invite.

I didn't say he didn't deserve an invite. I said SC will have a longer NFL career than him.
