Ski lift malfunction: unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Literally the first sentence of the article.
ok...my point being that it isn't regulated by US standards. And Georgia, if you've been there, isn't a first world country.

I've anecdotally heard that chairlifts aren't really regulated all that well in the US either, and it's largely up to the individual resorts to make sure they are safe. For example, an ex-resort employee posted online that at his resort every single safety stop was checked on every lift daily, and if even one had an issue the chair was closed until it was resolved. The chair could still run normally with a failure of only one safety stop due to redundancies, but his resort didn't take the chance. I don't believe the number of redundancies or the frequency of the inspections is mandated, even here.

This happens here in the US too. There was a malfunction at Tussey Mountain this winter.

Fortunately that accident only involved a slip of a few chairs. The OP's video is a full rollback, a catastrophic failure that means the motor and every safety stop had failed simultaneously. It impacts the entire lift and getting whipped around the bullwheel at either the top or bottom is very dangerous. The smart ones can be seen jumping off before reaching the bullwheel at the bottom.

Can anyone dissect the video and tell me what happened to the guy on the chair at 46 seconds?

I remember watching the Olympics as a kid and watching the downhill event and at the bottom of the hill were ambulances ready just in case.

Right then I thought any sport that has ambulances waiting, and this is for the very best skiers in the world, is not for me!

The guy in all black? It looks like he got off near the supports and ran to the left.
To me it looked like he got sucked up into the pile of chairs but it happens so quickly i can’t really tell. It’s a single rider that didn’t bail before the chair whips to the right.

Doesn't pretty much any major sport have an ambulance waiting on-site during games, just in-case? So, I take it that you did not participate in sports when growing up?

Wow crazy, only 10 injured luckily. Was nothing but a twisted pile of metal and wood when it finally stopped.

I see which one you mean now in the video you posted. I was watching the link video which is different. I think that guy bailed right as the camera turns left but I'm not certain.

Not only is Georgia a country, it is in Asia. Therefore these folks are Asians. They are Caucasians by race but Asians by geography
