“Stack (CEO of Dick’s Sporting Goods) said that current laws fail to prevent mass shootings. He expressed frustration that the Florida school shooter, who was 19 and had given off many warning signs he was dangerous, purchased a shotgun last November at a Dick’s store (though the weapon was not used at the school). ‘We did everything by the book. We did everything that the law required. And still he was able to buy a gun,’ Stack said.”

First, we’ll never “prevent mass shootings.” Not even with universal background checks. Sadly, that’s the price we pay for having guns. The best we can do is mitigate them through “common sense” gun controls and by hardening soft targets.

So what has Dick’s Sporting Goods accomplished. They’ve ceded AR15 sales to fringe sellers such as gun shows where the background check loophole exists, and thereby exacerbating the problem. We are, in effect, encouraging black market activity! This is another example of cowardly leadership for the sake of protecting the bottom line. Also, how will the 21 year-old-restriction on long rifle purchases work in places like Alaska where people rely on hunting for subsistence? One size doesn’t fit all.

Bless her heart, but Sen. Dianne Feinstein keeps referring to the AR15, Tec9, etc. as “weapons of war.” I challenge anyone here to take one of these guns as is, off-the-shelf, to a combat zone and survive against real weapons of war. You’ll get your ass handed to you. Ergo, they are not weapons of war.

Perhaps a compromise is to put a 21 year-old-restriction on semi-automatic rifles and high capacity magazines, coupled with universal background checks and controlled entry & exit points at schools. Make schools like courthouses. But we’ve got to get off this bandwagon of asking for too much. Just remember gun control is scalable. It gains momentum quickly and can get out-of-hand real fast despite even the best intention because ultimately, it's not about gun control it's about control...
