So....in addition to an upcoming 4 game set with the Bucs...the Giants,

have a bunch of games coming up with the Cubs and Cards.

Do you:

Root for the Giants to have a hot streak (except for the games vs Pittsburgh, of course) and increase the chances of the Buccos finishing first (or second) in the NL Central.

Or:

Do you root for the Cards and Cubs, with the idea that the Bucs are unlikely to catch the Cards anyway.....and you want to make sure the Giants (and Madison B) are not the Buccos opponent in a WC Play-In game??

As between the Giants and Cards, while the Giants are clearly the dominant team (3 World Series wins in the last 5 years), I have never met an ahole Giants fan but there are more and more of those in the Cardinal ranks so I would root for the Giants on that reason alone. Throw in the Pirate factor (per my dream we will catch the Cards) and the choice is easy... Giants. As between the Cubs and Giants, I fear neither, but I think the Giants have a better chance to knock of the Cards in the Wild Card game and again, factoring in the ahole fan factor, I want the Giants to beat the Cubs so that the stronger team will face the Cards.

I agree. While not a Giants fan in any way, I'd rather see them beat the Cards, who are playing so well the Bucs aren't likely to catch them without a lot of help from our "friends" (as in the enemy of my enemy...). I don't think the Cubs will overtake the Bucs, so I don't really care who wins the SF-ChiC games because once the Pirates are in the playoffs, all they have to do is win.

To make it simple, just root for any team playing the Cards and Cubs. The Cards have to hit a tough patch eventually? The Cubbies cannot be taken lightly, but the pressure may get to them as we close out August and get into September.

Ditto.

While I agree with your conclusion, why would you want to make it simple? I think this Board does much better if you say "The formula shown below conclusively proves why we should root for any team playing the Cards and Cubs"...
