So, we didn't make a single substitution on the o-line vs Wiscy?

Snap counts showing 62 offensive plays. Incredible. The o-line was really the unsung heros of the game. We put up 38 on, perhaps, the best D in college football.

I am not sure this is 100% accurate. I swear I saw Charles drop two passes, back to back (ok, the first was a tough catch while the second was a drop). The chart only shows him with one play.

Charles is listed at 3. Johnson saw one snap.

You are correct concerning Charles sir.

Wow that is really impressive.
Some interesting numbers there Chavis has been playing more and more the last few games.
Surprised that Thompkins had that many plays over Backnall.
Allen was/is and Ironman.
Buchholz is getting a lot more time as well.
Man we are going to be loaded for bear next year. Only area I'm worried about is LB'r and that I think our depth next year
isn't as good as it was this year and we all saw what happened in Sept. with the LB'rs.

never mind, I see someone else pointed that out.

No it says 3 plays for Charles. Only one for Johnson.

So I guess Cothran bumped Givens as a starter. Never really paid attention to that.

Marcus Allen played all 77 snaps on D. Tells you all you need to know about what the staff thinks of him at S

Cothran bumped Givens basically the first game he came back from suspension. Givens was actually 3rd team the last few games. From the last depth chart:

Defensive Tackle
52 Curtis Cothran (6-5, 285, Sr./Jr.)
93 Antoine White (6-2, 290, Jr./So.)
30 Kevin Givens (6-1, 275, So./Fr.)

Allen seemed to get exposed last year (2015) in pass coverage, but didn't seem to get picked on this year. Improved coverage skills or better defensive schemes? I don't know. But Allen is great against the run. Hope the NFL doesn't believe he is good enough right now to come out after this year.

The same goes for the rest of our best redshirt and true Juniors, Sickels, Gesicki and Godwin. Hopefully they all come back for their senior years and lead this team to the promised land...... again.

You are correct. He definitely dropped 2 passes on back-to-back plays.

I think the one he dropped (the 2nd one to him) was the same route that Blacknall scored on at the end of the 1st half. (I think... what do I know?) It seemed to me to be the same route on the opposite side of the field. Knowing that the staff likes Charles' speed and strength, I think they figured Charles could make the catch, be covered 1-1 in space, shake off the defender with his arm and take it home. That 2nd ball was catchable, and I wonder if Charles got a little too pumped, figuring the big one was there to be taken.

Or I could be completely wrong. No more bets are being taken.

I think Charles figured the same thing and had visions of the end zone. Took his focus off just catching the ball first.

The OL remains a major work in progress, obviously. The fact that we rolled up 38 points is a testament to our crafty offensive coordinator, amazing play by our gutsy, heady young QB (I believe he connected on 10+ straight passes at one point) and a stable full of top flight skill position guys, Saquan included. This offense would eclipse 1994's production if we had some more earth movers ready to produce. But we're a long ways from that right now (IMHO).

Charles face on he sideline after the second straight drop said it all. He knew he was done for the night.

There is too much talent for guys that are dropping balls to get snaps. Charles is going to be really, really good, though. Rough night for him on the field.

Not named Alabama; *at minimum should be a qualifier

Was thinking the same thing. That Alabama D is insane. I like to call things out as over-hyped as much as anyone, but I'm actually on the hype train with that Alabama D. simply suffocating in all areas.

To beat Alabama you need to get some D and special teams scores, because your offense isn't going to score much.

People hate the SEC hype so much that they lump Bama in with it. Bama isn't hype and the last decade shows it. The best program in the country right now by quite a bit and that defense is nasty.

That Wisconsin D was slow in the back end and we exploited it. Bama is fast and big and will look like they have 13 guys on that side of the ball

The Bama offense is very good, but they have had better.

The defense is ridiculously good. Amazing stat -- their defense and special teams have scored as many TDs (13, I believe) as their opponents have scored on offense. Has such a thing ever happened before?

PSU has 16 OL:

Played: Bates, Gonzalez, Gaia, McGovern, Wright
Injured: Nelson, Mahon, Palmer
Dog House: Beh
Redshirt: Menet, Fries, Gellerstedt

That leaves Laurent, Brosnan, Jenkins, & Dowrey unaccounted for. It's surprising that none of those kids have earned a few snaps given the injuries.

He, P. Cothren, and Givens will be dominant next year.

DT is probably the biggest positive surprise of the year. I thought we would be pretty good at DE with Sickels, Schwan, & Brown returning but I was very worried about DT. Cothran, Cothren, & White were mid level recruits with limited experience. Givens was light weight for the position and who knew what to expect from Chavis. Those guys turned out to be a pretty solid group.

And just think it is made up of one TFr, two RFr, one RSo and Gaia (5th year) and the two starting OTs should be back next year (Nelson and Mahon). Add to that Beh, Menet, Fries and Jenkins and PSU will finally have a true two deep OL for the first time since the sanctions first hit.

On the defensive side there is plenty of DL depth to replace Schwan, but need to find capable replacements for BBell and Golden (not sold on Apke).

CJF has said that the first part of Dec. practices will concentrate on player development, featuring some of the reserves and red-shirted guys.

It will be interesting to get some info on how some of those kids are progressing. No inside info, but I'll bet Daniel Joseph turns out to be a very good player.

Good points bdgan.

Once again, coaching can be applauded imo, as the player development, defensive schemes and active rotations are helping to elevate the play of multiple players on the defense.

I'd guess that Gesicki has gone up to him and reminded him that he (Gesicki) last year had one of the worst cases of the drops in the history of organized football. The coaches, too. This year Gesicki, man, what a pair of hands. Sometimes you need to suck before you can get to be good.

Good point; Gesicki has become a real headache for opposing defenses. Charles (and Juwan Johnson, too) can do the same thing in 2017 and beyond. The success that big, strong PSU receivers have had vs opposing defenders this year has been key to the team's success.

If this Juwan Johnson develops some good hands, then he will be awesome in my opinion. He's definitely a huge target.

Hack's erratic lasers didn't help the situation. Much easier to adjust to the ball when it isn't thrown 100 MPH.

Re Charles... I was wondering how much Thomkins saw the field after he did not catch that perfectly delivered deep pass down the sidelines.

The announceers tried to cover him saying he was perfectly defended... nonsense. The defender was well behind him and his grab at the arms was after the fact. That ball was laid in there like a pillow and he short-armed it. Had he extended his arms, it drops in for a huge completion.

I gather the staff saw that, too. And I don't recall him being thrown to after that. When I have the chance, i'll re-watch to see.

Back to Charles... the first pass was not catchable. The second clearly was and he broke the cardinal rule. He'll learn.

But isn't it nice to have so many exceptional receivers that we can casually wave goodbye to a Geno Smith and bench others who underperform and replace them with even better athletes? And this is only going to get better as time marches on.

Bright days!
