So where are all those "win the toss & defer to the 2nd half' people at?

Only in your mind sir.

But that's ok.

I could be wrong, but I think most coaches prefer to get the ball after the half. This means you get the wind in the 1st and 4th quarters. The 4th downwind is important because that is often when a critical field goal must be made under pressure.

But, I can accept the benefit of early momentum if there is confidence in the offense and/or kick return game. Some teams feed on momentum. And, of course, wind doesn't matter if it is in a neutral direction or is calm, or if the game is already in hand.

I can remember the days before one had the option to defer. Some coaches (and I think this at times included JVP) preferred to kick off and take the wind if it was strong or weather so bad that a defensive struggle was expected. JVP loved defensive struggles, punting, and field position. He wanted his best players on defense. Who could forget the 6-4 game with Iowa. How times have changed.

While scoring first has worked out for us it still will never convince me taking the ball first when you win the coin toss is the right thing to do ever. In a close game more often than not the team with the most takeaways (fewest turnovers) wins. Takeaways give you the ability to score twice in a row. Getting the ball to start the 2nd half can be used as a takeaway. Score with little or no time left in the first half and then get the ball back to score again before your opponent really had a chance.

Even without the free takeaway factor I just think if I am up coming out of the half and getting the ball that is good. If I am down coming out of half I want the ball. Taking it first in my mind makes no sense ever. Way more strategy knowing you get it coming out of the half.

Thank God no more: "We're going to kick-it to 'em, play defense and not pitch (THROW) the ball around today!-Joe's famous quote just before we played Illinois, at Illinois, for the first time. We were favored by 16 points I think that day! UGH!!

We promptly lost that day!!

i am not sure of your point. Last night, would it have made much difference? Iowa had more yards in penalties (penalties against us) then they had rushing. The defense was just as good, if not better, than the offense. BTW, I've never been a fan of defering. In fact, I think the rule should be if your coin comes up, you receive (if you call heads, and its heads, you receive. If its tails you choose endzone to defend).

Hehe ya laugh at them. Those idiots. I'm I right? Hehe hahah

These kind of post are annoying to me..the look how stupid you are and how smart I'm type post

Electing to receive the ball at kick off is generally considered a "f-you."

First time we played Illinois in Illinois was in 1954 and we promptly won that day 14-12. First time we lost in Illinois was 1960 and didn't lose a game there again until 2001.

You tell him PR; GLOV drinks a lot before he posts; usually after a Notre Dame loss.

Is it really ...my recollection was Joe put the best unit in the game first. When we had Collins and crew it was offense all the way. When D was best he deferred. yawn ............

LMAO at you!

and I am LMAO at your stupidity. The point of that original post was GIVEN THE CHOICE as the winner of the toss, I wanted the team to defer and get the ball to start the second half. That strategy would be to put the defense on the field first, get a quick stop, and make them punt the ball to you and then, take the ball down the field and score on the first possession.

Play out the first half and get the ball to start the second half.

Maybe you weren't paying attention or maybe you just don't understand what happened on Saturday night, but Iowa won the toss and Penn State DIDN'T HAVE THE CHOICE. Iowa deferred to the second half.

So, your whole "ha ha you're wrong and I am right" is nonsensical.
