The drop issue is well known. But other than Hamler, why no separation? Mcsorley is looking bad because there is no one open imo.

Probably combo of coaching and just don't have many good wrs outside Hamler.

Nice see Dotson. Wish he would play alot more over Polk.

I suspect we’re going to see a lot more of Dotson from here on out. This team needs another dependable playmaker, and he may fill that need

Because they aren't pushing off like you'll see the Michigan receivers will this week and not get called for it.
I wonder if that's JJ's problem. He had a reputation for pushing off and got called for it a couple times. Now he struggles to get much separation at all.

He's so physically imposing that if he pushes off it's like killing a fruit fly with a hammer. He would make one Hell of a tight end where separation isn't as necessary, but the finish and catch are(which may be an issue). Honestly, I'd like to know if the team has a sports psychologist on staff. If not, it might benefit immensely.

McSorley has been not so good lately.

WR's are not helping him that is for sure.

Agreed, first the drops, then lack of separation from wr then, and TM making some awful throws on guys that are open. Easily worth 6 catches a game between the three which can really add up to points, offensive rythym, and a more rested D. And 6 per game is probably only dropping half as many TM only missing half as many and a small improvement by WR's.

One thing I have noticed is that we seem to use few comeback routes. We had smaller receivers in Butler and Norwood, and to a lesser extent DWill because he was midsized, who killed secondaries doing this.
Routes go too far downfield IMO. No short outs or crossing patterns.

Totally agree and we used some effective wr screens the last couple years that have dropped off

Well our receivers coach came from Army--who almost never passes, so why is he a receivers coach?

I don't know anything about the receivers coach but I trust CJF. I also don't think you can blame drops on a coach, these aren't just now learning how to catch. Wr separation could be coaching but what I read on here is so basic any coach would suggest it. As to route running that seems as much OC as wr coach.

Part of it is that they don't have the tall people downfield. With height you don't need as much separation (or any). Trace had the luxury of being able to throw deep sideline and Godwin/Ham and Blacknall would catch them. With Thompkins and Polk, because they're small, that's now a low percentage throw. PSU's receivers were just too big and athletic for a lot of teams; this year they don't have that advantage.

Johnson has the height but not the ball skills. He can't high point the ball the way, say, Gesicki could.

Anyway Thompkins had a good game against Iowa, that's something to build on.
It would be nice if they could get Shorter on the field because they need some more size out there.

He actually spent most his career at William and Mary under Laycock who was a guru of the passing game.

Not that there's any defense for how ineffective the passing game has been this year.

I think it's the loss of Ham, Gesicki, Blacknall but it's also the loss of three key offensive coaches -- Moorhead, Gattis and Huff. You have to wonder where we'd be if Gattis instead of Rahne got the coordinator job when Moorhead left.

It's just been a lot of things. I wonder how different the year might have gone if Shorter hadn't gotten injured, stayed on schedule and was in the rotation from Week 1. Just one more receiver with size and ball skills could have made a huge difference.

They do get separation. When they do McSorley misses them by yards or they drop the balls when he hits them....fix those things and they sustain drives and score 40-50 pts a game. The D gets rest. Receivers don't get open on every play that is why there is a check off system. But you have to hit them when they are open and when you do they have to catch the ball.
