skip the bowl, and they got thrashed when their 6'6", 210 lb backup qb, with arms like pipecleaners, showed up terrible.

And now, scUM, missing several NFL wannabes, gets beat like circus ponies by a bad Florida team. Huh. It's almost like blowing off your bowl game is harmful to your so-called "brothers."

The powers that be made it what it is. With all the money floating around in college football and the players getting precious little, what do you expect?

Syracuse had 3 starters on D skip as well
Besides who cares, it’s WVU, plus Holgs is going to Houston away

I don’t really have much of a problem with it. It’s a big risk for some of these guys. It’s a shame it happens, but I certainly understand it.
That's exactly what my WVU friends said before they got shamed on national TV by Syracuse. I sense a different tone now.

Maybe Dana should actually start recruiting and developing some QB’s instead of relying on transfers.

I agree that the powers to be (NCAA) made it what it is. I also agree that the money is ridiculous. I don't agree that the players are getting precious little.

I don't think the media started this, but they certainly push the players to do it. It's the same as leaving early for the NFL. The media people pester them about this stuff every chance they get.

I have a big problem with it. Players are paid via scholarship, room, board, spending money, tutors, coaching, clothes, nutrition bars, 1st class travel, entertainment, bowl prizes, etc. It seems to me if they accept these benefits they should be obligated to play the whole season which includes the bowl game.

I don't blame the kids. They're looking our for #1. I blame the rules that don't align the bowl season with the academic year.

I’m not saying I like it, just that I get it. Its not an easy decision either way. I think I would play, but man would I ever turn into a raging alcoholic if I played and got injured to the point that it ruined my NFL career.

Media maybe. More likely agents. Telling kids what they like to hear

if and when “players” become paid employees, then maybe their compensation will require them to participate in certain events ...... like bowl games (kinda’ like coaches have to participate in PCs).

Until then, who the F has any right to expect any damn thing...... wrt when a kid decides he is done playing “student-athlete”?
Some Natty-Lite Pounding fans? LOL

No one - obviously :) - guarantees the kid any damn thing.
Any damn thing like “You’ve got a right to pursue your education - first and foremost - and a spot on the squad while you do”.

There is some obligation though, right? It would not be OK for a kid to take the scholarship and choose to not play any games, would it? I mean, that is where it gets troublesome for me. At what point has a student done enough in their sport to justify their scholarship?

His teammates have the right to expect something. Does the program have the right to expect the fans' support if the players cut and run?

If they lose that support, your team becomes Rutgers.

If the players had the option of signing out of high school for a pro team and going through a minor league development, that might make more sense (and quicker money) for them, but no way do 100,000 fans show up to see their minor league games.

The players are obviously important, but college football support is more about the fans connection to the college. Just my .02, but I don't like the trend of players skipping bowl games.

Exactly right. God forbid some people look out for their own future. Jake Butt played for his brothers, lost, and blew up his knee costing him millions. I wonder if Harbaugh and his brothers tossed him millions for playing in that game. No I really don’t as I know the answer.

I could see people being upset if the kids were skipping playoff games, but they aren’t. The NCAA and schools make millions off the bowls, but hey the kids get an I pad and some gift certificates. This whole thread is about people hating change, but it isn’t their GD life or choice to make.

The kid skipping the game is basically telling the school what he thinks of their "education" (or that he's received his degree, so you're done paying me, I'm done playing for you. Sayo-fvcking-nara).

Maybe we will all get lucky and this trend will kill the bowls.

Yes, that's exactly what the kids are saying. IMO the scholarship arrangement should require players to finish the season even if the semester ended a few weeks earlier.

The playoffs are expanding so look for the bowls to mean even less and that is a good thing. Real sports get decided on the field not on a weekly popularity contest based on antiquated polling systems who rewards teams who have their own set of rules like ND. Had they really been in the ACC fully, they don’t see the top 4. Expanded Playoffs and true national standards need to occur. It’s the only sport in college decided like this. This is long overdue but traditionalists cannot handle real change so they have to spoon feed it to them.

Okay. Let's call the nominal end of the season January 10. Kid drops out of school to prepare for the NFL sometime in December. How does the school enforce its fvcking contractual rights?

Just a side note. I think the WVU-SYR line went from wvu -7 to syr -3 on Griers announcement.

Clawback clause in the scholarship agreement. The NCAA could also work with the NFL to cooperate with this.

How is it harmful? It's meaningless. They still got their swag.

Yeah, NCAA and NFL working together against a player? Courts would love that. Clawback in the scholarship agreement? Kid can write a check against his first NFL contract to pay his last term's tuition and fees.

And if they leave after their junior year, they have to pay back their whole last year as well.

The NFL agreed not to take any kids until they've been out of high school for at least 3 years. I think they could agree to cooperate with this.

LOL--why would they? We're talking about exhibition games. The only reason any senior goes is the swag or to play for one final time.

The NFL and NCAA could work this out if they wanted to. They did it with the 3 years out of high school rule and they could do this if they were so inclined.

Why would the NFL want to pay the NCAA money so a kid can skip a meaningless exhibition game? It doesn't make any sense. The three year mutually benefitted both. This doesn't benefit the NFL at all

I'm not looking for the NFL to pay the schools. I'm just trying to protect the integrity of the game. What if you paid to travel to a bowl game only to learn that your team's top players weren't going to participate? Next thing you'll see is kids pulling a hamstring in September and deciding to sit out the remainder of the season so they can prepare for the NFL. I think that's wrong and I think rules could be changed to correct it. That's my opinion.

I'm trying to hold onto the dream that college sports are played by college students. I'm not one of those people who think we should pay players or that players should be able to major in football. I think that would be horrible. Maybe I'm dreaming.
