Some days you just need The Clash

I do love me some Clash.

One thing that never fails to amuse me is wondering what the flying eff Joe Strummer is singing in the opening lines of Wrong ‘Em Boyo.

I know, the lyrics can be Googled — I don’t bother. Nothing will ever convince me that is actual English 😂

I know the song Stagger Lee because I've listened to the Dead for a long time.
It's a version of a verse of an old folk song called Stagger Lee. The end result is Billy stabbed Stagger Lee in the back, in this version.

Many don’t know that The Clash admired American and Caribbean roots rock and reggae. Much of their influence came from American bluesy folk. I believe Stagger Lee was originally a blues song.

Side note: those who haven't listened to Strummer's work with The Mescaleros really should give it a listen. I think its some of the best rock in the last 25 or so years.

You know, Wrong em Boyo is actually a cover of an old Jamacian ska song, which is actually a sort of cover of stagger lee. I really like the original.
Same with Police on my back.
Same with Armageddon Time

Yes but also no. Check out the version that The Clash is actually covering above. Wrong Emboyo by The Rulers.

I got to see Joe Strummer way back in Brooklyn in 2002. He did a week of shows at a place called St. Annes warehouse. He died a little later that year. There had been talk of The Clash finally getting back together. Mick Jones was there and played a few songs with Joe. Mainly the Clash songs.

It was a whos who of NYC punk. The Misfits were there dressed up, like, well the misfits. It was surreal. I was just finishing up college, and therefore pretty broke and couldn't afford tickets for more than the first day. But wow, what a night.

Wow that would have been excellent to see. You were very lucky.
I liked his work with the Mescalero's too.

That's a helluva setlist and venue.

My only time there but it was indeed a great place. I used to work in the summers right up the street in Red Hook.

A few years back, I actually got to meet and hang out with DJ Scratchy, who was the Clash's tour DJ.
He had nothing but great things to say about Joe.

Found of video of Strummer doing a cover of Walk on the Wild Side. Sound is crap

also this.

I loved Big Audio Dynamite (BAD).

Back in the 90's - early 00's, when I was doing a lot of cycling I would put this on just spin forever.
B.A.D. and B.A.D. II were interesting. You could see the creative differences between Strummer and Jones in the work they did after The Clash. For those of you who are Beastie Boys fans, their autobiography has some stories of them hanging out with Strummer and Jones while in London during their early years.
