Guys did similar feats in Viet Nam but while they were under fire. There are heros among us.
When I was in public accounting I got acquainted with the CFO of one of our client companies. Like me he was a Penn State accounting graduate but about 15 years prior to me. He told me the story of his family coming up to University Park for his graduation and in the car ride home his Dad told him he got his draft notice for Viet Nam. So he volunteered to fly helicopters. He went from auditing financial statements to flying helicopters with supplies and men in and out of the jungle all the while being shot at. Wrap your head around that all you guys pissed off that Penn State lost a football game. The scoopers have a clear path and no hills and valleys to navigate. It takes real talent to drop their loads in the right spots.
Helitac pilots I worked with in AK in the 70s were all Viet Nam vets. As were the para cargo loadmasters.
