Out of 59 living recipients, just 22 were at last year’s events. Whalen says the Trust expects a higher number this year, but Brown doesn’t think that’s where this is headed. “The board says they don’t need us,” he said. “Well, if they keep losing guys, they’re going to see how that works out.”

Crouch agrees. He thinks the numbers will keep falling and interest keep fading. “We are just at a stalemate with the board,” the former Nebraska quarterback told me. “The way things are going, it’s not hard to imagine an award ceremony with no winners and no sponsors someday.”

Their big issue appears to be not having a Heisman winner on the board? That would cause this much discontent? Hm.

Their issue come the weekend should be that a punk like mayfield was allowed to disgrace the trophy.
I'm sure that one or two Heisman winners in the "good ole' days" had character issues that were not common knowlege, but it now seems that there is absolutely no expectations to act in a respectful way on and off the field. It may not have started with Johnny "Football" Manzel, but he and Cam Newton are prime examples of sensational statistics and amazing plays being the sole focus of Heisman voters. It is a shame. I don't want the award to the player who has the best character (saves drowning puppies, volunteers at soup kitchens, etc.) without consideration for their ability to play football... I'm sure that there must already be an award for that. I would like to see character matter, and exclude players with arrests, and significant disrespectful acts like Baker Mayfield has on his resume.

Eric Crouch won the Heisman Trophy based on one trick play. Antwan Randle El was pretty much the entire Indiana team. He was far more important and a far better player than Crouch.

That is when I knew the Heisman Trophy had jumped the shark.

Serious Question. Who is Eric Crouch?

Yes, the award, by default, is given to the best quarterback on one of the top 4 or 5 teams. There are times that it could go to a RB or WR, but these cases are usually when the QB for these top teams aren't very good. Sometimes, when there are no RB or WR without meaningful statistics, the award goes to the QB on the best team.

I would really like to see all of the winners of the separate defensive position group awards (Thorpe, Butkis, Hendricks, etc.) be the nomination for the best defensive player (Nagursky) and all of the winners of the separate offensive position group awards (Belitnakoff, O'Brien, Doak Walker, etc.) be the nomination for the best offensive player (Maxwell), throw in special teams, burlesworth, etc. and these are the nominees for the best overall CFB player (Heisman). So, in this case, there is one QB, one RB, one TE, one LB, etc. that all get equal billing on the ballot. Of course, the reality is that the QB is the most important player on most teams, so they would still win the overall award most of the time. It would give some more notoriety to the winners of the other position awards to be finalists for the Heisman though.

Why would the board need them?

It seems to me that it is a privilege to attend not a right to attend future ceremonies.

Heisman trustees serve pro bono. I'm sure that if a bunch of players want to get together and replace them, the answer would be "knock yourself out."

Why can’t it be like that with PSU trustees?

Rashaan Salaam was one of the sadder endings for a Heisman winner. Ernie Davis was probably the saddest.

Or Nile Kinnick.

"I thank God I was born on the gridirons of the MidWest and not on the battlefields of Europe."

He died four years later while serving as a Navy aviator.

No question in my mind that he was the best in the country that year. He was one amazing college player, carrying his entire team on his back. Him not getting the Heisman that year was a travesty. The Heisman is a garbage award anymore.
