So, does Sorenson add the "continuously slap Zain in the head" technique to his arsenal Saturday?

Nothing else he's done has worked to date. I'm sure he, Casey, Cody, Jake, and Cael have developed a countering strategy.

Well, I would argue that the discussed technique hasn't really worked, other than maybe keeping the score down a bit.

Sorensen isn't a slugger like half of the Rutgers team. Sorensen is a fine wrestler and seems like a great guy.

However, if you ask HR they think Sorensen has closed the gap against Zain. You have guys there talking about how close his last match with Zain in Carver was, but they seem to omit the last time they actually wrestled. I don't know, maybe they have blacked it out from their memories but for those from HR that are reading this, allow me to remind you.

Did Sorenson have different tactics during the OT match, or just emply them better.
IIRC he got out from bottom quickly somehow ?

All I can say is that it was a damn shame that the outcome of the Deakin-Sorensen match was taken out of the wrestlers hands and decided by the Ref with that headgear call. Damn shame.

correct,,, the biggest difference in that match was he escaped from bottom

I also think he got a TD

I think Zain was a little off his game, flu/cold type thing, though that was never publicly disclosed. And Sorenson gave him all he could handle.

Just my guess, but this time I'll say Zain by Major Decision, but not tech.

One of our own guys was a benefit of one of those calls last March, I'm sure you remember. While I agree that in both cases it would have been better if the wrestlers decided it, in a way they kind of did. I'm one of those that think the stills show enough to give that ref the benefit of doubt in this call.

I do recall and I didn't like it then either.
I just think it must be incredibly egregious to make that call, especially late in a match.

I hear ya. I just think if it gains an advantage (I believe it did both times) they have to call it.
I also think headgear for matches should be optional. Protect them during practice.

Multiple takedowns actually. No idea how this next match will play out and I am probably stating the obvious but if he can stay strong underneath like the match in Carver then he has a chance, albeit a small one.

Soooo...

Tech Fall least likely.
Decision, Major, or Fall equally likely?

Sorensen wrestled a hell of a match in Carver-Hawkeye, and he would've beat the brakes off of anyone who wasn't a world team member the way he attacked that night. That said, we have 4 matches between these guys over the last two seasons, Zain has won the others by pin, major and a 4-0 decision.

The only time Sorensen has been close has been on his home mat, I don't expect him to be close on Saturday either.

NittanyChris, I don't actually follow. How does the lateness within the match have an affect on making the call? If the headgear was grabbed it was illegal and needs to be called. I can't tell in the Deakin Sorenson match from the grainy video but Sorensen's head took an unusual dive so I can only assume Chapman saw it. Hall's headgear was used against him last year and it had to be called....even if there are 5 seconds left. Should the clasped hands against Brown's Pitt opponent in the NCAA finals not be called because it was late and really not a big deal?

Here's what none of us like: Points that aren't called.....

As to Cenzo, that was BS simply because the headgear actually wasn't on and Chapman should have stopped the match 5 seconds before when the headgear was draped around the neck.

And in that case, the review clearly showed it was already coming off. Terrible call there.

I don't remember that. Coach said Zain was the toughest wrestler he's ever met (sorry, paraphrased a bit).

If I recall correctly, In his post-match presser, he said something to the affect of "You can tell he wasn't 100%, then stopped before he said "cent" and went on to talk about his toughness." I said recently, you can hear when his media filter kicks in, and it did there. I also had heard from some "insiders" before the match that several guys were under the weather heading into that dual, FWIW.

That all said, Sorenson is a talented dude, and Zain has got to bring his A game. If he does, another fall is certainly within reach.

Not sure what to say, so I'll go with ;).

Or to use a recent example: Campbell shouldn't have been hit with his approximately 85th, 86th, and 87th stall calls vs. Sparty because the score was close late in the match?

I got Zain by regular decision, though I hope he gets some bonus. Sorenson is a very talented guy who always comes to wrestle. That match they had at Carver last year was unreal. No excuses, they both were on the mat and he took it to Zain that night. They both showed amazing grit. In a weird way I kind of feel bad for him cause he could have possibly been a multiple time NC if Zain was not at 149.

My point is this: There is an unwritten officiating rule, whether we like it or not. For example in football, a holding penalty that is callable in the first quarter is often not called late in the 4th quarter during a game deciding drive. Now, that is not to say it's NEVER called late in the game. If it is especially egregious and obvious and gives a substantial advantage that leads to a TD or huge play, then of course it is called. Deakin's infraction did not rise to that standard, IMO.

Stalling calls are a different matter entirely. They should be called late because that is when they are especially egregious and impacting the match even more.

I have lots of respect for all your studs they simply come to wrestle and most of them have been successful at their time wrestling.
Sorenson is one heck of a outstanding wrestler. If no injury or illness happens will be a 4 time AA...They don't come along every day..He lacks the speed of Zain and the mat wrestling..My guess will be a major to tech fall.

See this tweet. Better angle, obvious call. Nobody wants to win that way but to say it didn’t help Deakin get the leg is just false. It has to be called.
