Sounds like 5 star '23 QB Dante Moore may be looking around

A Michigan St reporter put in a crystal ball to Sparty despite him being a long time Oregon commit. Apparently Oregon's coach has been linked to the Auburn opening and is an SEC guy.

I know we have our '23 qb but is it worth Franklin kicking the tires on Moore just to see what he's thinking? He was considering us at one time.

Also, with coaching carousel season coming up perhaps having a few open '23 spots will come in handy. Maybe we find a nice rb or DL to add? What else is needed in that class to close it out?

Should we finish 10-2 with a NY6 bowl game we probably have the momentum to swing a highly rated recruit or 2 from the end of year coaching chaos.

He should be barred from recruiting anyone other than OL and DL for the next 30 days.

No more RBs, no more CBs, no more tweeners.

Big, ugly, mean OL and DL
And a high profile QB that wants to play as a freshmen would not be interested in sitting behind Allar for 2 years.

The roster needs linemen, especially big DT's and OT's, but it's also likely that the staff brings in another RB and if Veilleux leaves a QB. 4 scholarship QB's are the minimum in college football and 4 RB's is not ideal, especially if one is recovering from a torn ACL. But if the staff does not get another RB in the 2023 class we may see one come in via the transfer portal, and same at QB if Veilleux leaves.

Obviously, I'm making my point via absurd exaggeration.

Take the extra linemen is my real point. So what if a RB doesn't develop like we thought - all of these guys would run it fine if they had a line.

Yep, point well taken. But unfortunately with the transfer portal in play managing the numbers so that there is still some talent on the field if/when injuries arise at RB and QB will likely make those positions a priority between now and the 2023 season.

Yet Franklin having publically recognizing the lack of size on the DL to line up with the big boys has only 1 true big framed DT in each of the 2022 and 2023 classes........

I'm thinking a good portal rb is going to be harder than a good '23 rb recruit. Whomever comes in does so with the likely realization of limited reps next year. I think that would be easier to sell to a HS kid with a redshirt plus 4 than to a portal guy who needs to make the next year or two count for a shot at the next level.

Agreed on the OTs and DTs. We have some top end IOL in this class but need the tackles. As far as DL, you have 4 stars LeBlanc (we pursued heavily) maybe looking with Oklahoma falling off or maybe Will Norman (NJ kid committed to Florida oh and maybe RB Webb would be open to reconsider).

I know some think we have enough WRs but if Gallagher were to reconsider his WVU pledge, I'd take him.

Still worth pursuing. The best teams get a 4 or 5 star QB in every class. There's always going to be some attrition, need to play the odds at the most important position on the field. Allar having tons of success and being drafted to the NFL would help us a lot for future QB recruiting, we have practically no NFL QB success to speak of when in mom and dad's living room.

Plus, people are acting like Allar is a sure thing. Based on what? A bunch of series when the game is out of reach? He looks very promising so far but that isn't a lock and injuries do happen. You need to bring in guys who aren't afraid to compete every year. So give Moore another pitch and if we don't get him then fine. But these 5 star guys are all picking schools where they need to compete.

JFF is a relationship guy. If he has a previous relationship with this kid then he probably knows he is looking around and has contacted as appropriate. If not he has moved on.

It seems that staff is going to try and get another H.S. RB for the if they can get a good one. But I believe they could sell a portal player at a non P5 school with the opportunity to travel with PSU and get a PSU MBA at the same time. That 4th or 5th RB would just be using a scholarship for a 1 year insurance policy. Or they may try and find a walk on RB that they believe could actually play in an emergency.

With the current interior OL talent and the incoming top interior commits, all the more reason to get Tengwall at OT for the next 2 years. But Trautwein knows more about it than we do. Maybe Williams begins his PSU career at OT.

Hope you are correct and Franklin/Scott can flip one of the war daddy DT's they seem to have missed out on.

Surely the staff has continued communicating with Gallagher. From what's been written the WVU chance has about a 50% chance of being fired which would open his recruitment up again.

For all the WR's on the roster, there are no real prospects for a big time deep thread to emerge. None of the WR's that have played this year seem to be that type of player, other than Washington doing his thing. And if any of the WR's being redshirted had that abiity they would be playing and not redshirting. So I gotta believe that the staff is still out looking for another downfield WR regardless of what may happen with Gallagher.

With the way the game is played, the importance of having game breaking WR's, it seems that WR is the position that will continually be over recruited numbers wise and the position where PSU will have the highest turnover into the transfer portal. Especially since the staff can't just reload with 5 star WR's the way oh-high-ya does..........

He sure does. And he'll get behind a few defenses for long gains. But other than Washington who's short stature does not match up well physically down the field on the 50-50 balls (but somehow manages to catch more than his share of them due to his unbelieveable ball skills) PSU does not seem to have a WR that gets down the field and can come down with the 50-50 balls the way ARob, Godwin, and a few others did in leading explosive passing games.

Clifford doesn't throw a good 50/50 ball. He's been better at it since Michigan, but it's not his strong suit.

Evans and Saunders will likely be the type who can take the top off a defense next year. Both are just raw from route running standpoints and lack the strength to be physical as true freshman.

Washington has been very good this year. Tinsley a close second. TEs are getting targeted and doing a good job. With the carrys we give our backs, there just isn't a lot more to go around.

Evans and Saunders MAY develop into players that can get their fair share of 50-50 balls. They sure don't have the strength to win those battles now, and with their lack of size I don't believe they will ever have big time success with the 50-50 balls. They may take the top off once in a while and be 5-7 yards behind a defense, which is great, but doesn't usually very often beat the teams with very good secondaries such as OSU.

Washington has developed into a #1 WR, but is not the deep threat on 50-50 balls that PSU had a while back with ARob and Godwin. Hamler and Dotson were not the same kind of deep threats, although especially Dotson made catches for Clifford that helped Clifford have some success he didn't deserve base on his lack of accuracy.

Sure Clifford has not had great success throwing deep balls. But a good part of that may fall on the lack of physical WR's that can come up with contested catches. After Godwin left the cubboard has been pretty bare on WR physicality.

So I believe the next physical, downfield WR that can win a disproportionate share of 50-50 balls is not now on the PSU roster.

Agree with everything but this. You have to put the ball in contest for it to be 50/50. The majority of SCs are overthrown or out of bounds. The WRs can't be physical if the ball isn't in their catch radius.

Go back to CVs limited snaps last year. He threw a 50/50 ball to Warren vs Rutgers that Warren came down with. SC didn't throw a single pass like that in '21.

Is Clifford's lack of putting up 50-50 balls on him, or on the coaches lack of trust in the WR's ability to win those battles?

There must be a reason why putting up balls for a WR and DB to fight for is not now in the offense. But it would make sense that if the coaches had confidence in the WR's ability to win a good share of those battles they would practice it more and also direct Clifford to let some of those fly.

Doubt we will ever know, but it would be an interesting question for someone in the media with enough stones to ask Franklin one of these Tuesdays......

Agree. Put him in vs. the one’s and would enjoy watching him perform. Probably won’t happen but it would be interesting to see his reaction times and patience in the pocket.

Remember Irv Charles! JF said he was the best looking WR he had ever coached in his career. Problem was, he couldn't catch in the real game.

Two years ago JF was touting Meiga big time, but he has barely seen the field. 6-4, 200 lbs. 4.43 speed. Exactly what we are looking for; however, they rarely put him in the game. JF's evaluation off WR's is way off or misinterpreted during practice.

Or what CJF tells the public doesn't match his true thoughts. Why would he ever be 100% transparent publicly? Coaches say what they need to in order to satisfy the media, prevent opponents from having much info, and to try to keep the locker room and players on track and motivated.

Other than the 3-4 accurate throws he has per game, every ball Clifford puts up is a 50/50 shot.
