Speight Leaving Michigan

Potentially interesting reflection on Harbaugh with Speight leaving Michigan. http://www.detroitnews.com/story/sp...announces-he-transferring-michigan/108058422/ Interesting to see later on whether he thought he had lost the job or whether he didn't like Harbaugh.
I’m probably biased here but why would Speight dislike the guy who twice handed him the starting job and repeatedly supported him publicly when he struggled?

My guess is that - with Peters performance and rumors of McCaffrey’s practice performance - Harbaugh wouldn’t guarantee Speight the starting job if he came back. That would make a lot more sense than a personal rift imo.

With Kurt Benkert set to depart, possible return to his home state Cavaliers perhaps?

Stop. Stupid speculation. Why? To what end? Everything is there in the article.

I never saw where Speight said the particular reason why he left. He simply stated many nice things about his time at Michigan. If he really appreciated it that much, why didn't he plan on staying and competing for the quarterback job.

When there is an issue between an employer and an employee, and the employee says he voluntarily resigned, do you always believe the resignation is voluntary?

Maybe he just sees the writing on the wall and realizes he won't start next year at Michigan and is looking for a place where he'll have a better chance. Doesn't mean that he didn't appreciate his years in Ann Arbor and his relationship with his coaches.

You may be reaching but who knows. His mother seemed to have good things to say about Harbaugh and the School as well. I guess they both could be lying but I kinda doubt it. So when a PSU player leaves for another school after graduating to play another year and says nice things about Franklin and PSU do you immediately jump to they aren't telling the truth? Maybe he saw there was a better chance of playing time somewhere else.

I believe that dailybuck77 is a fan of your arch rival. Your question should be concerning an tOSU player leaving and Urban.;)

Absolutely not. On the other hand, it is possible that there is some sort of rift. I said "POTENTIALLY interesting" reflection on Harbaugh (who came to Michigan with a reputation as a quarterback guru). Considering the poor play of Michigan quarterbacks the last two years, I would follow Speight wherever he goes and see if anything comes out. If not, he just wanted a change of scenery, which is his right.

Wasn't there also some discussion of Shea Patterson transferring to UM?
There has been though it has been shot down by a well-informed mod on a non-Rivals site. I think UM (and others) are holding off to see what happens with the impending sanctions at Ole Miss (i.e., whether he would be eligible to play immediately).

That’s shocking to me. I thought he’d be the starter next year hands down. I thought he was quite good at times and didn’t like the thought of facing him next year in Michigan. Oh well. This would seem to be a good thing for our chances in 2018.

I'd be against any of Ole Miss's players being allowed to transfer and play immediately. You have to assume that any or all of them have willingly received benefits while there. No reason to allow them to condone cheating, and then not suffer any consequences. I'm sure all of their stars received $100 handshakes at one time or another.

I’d certainly vet them pretty thoroughly but I don’t think it’s right to paint them all with the “took a bribe” brush. That said, Patterson went to Ole Miss because his brother was on staff at the time he committed.

Sweet jeebus that was dumb.

QB is the one major position where "there can be only one". Transfers there make sense--if the kid wants to play and start at QB. Worked for Jeff Hostelter, for one.

Based only a cursory review of the UVA roster, it appears he may have a shot there. Looks like Benkert, their QB, is a senior, and they have some younger kids on the roster, but Speight may be able to get the starting job just by showing up.

Mendenhall is in year two of a total program rebuild. They broke even at 6-6 this year, but the talent is still very much down (there 10-0 loss to VaTech felt as insurmountable as being down 35-0 because of the talent gap). Team ebbed and flowed based on how the first quarter went most of the year. Inability to score and giving up early points usually doomed a team that could not establish any semblance of a running game. Schedule was favorable as they missed Clemson and NCSt, though, so they were still squarely middle of the pack.

One thing that Benkert did well at times was throwing the deep ball. Speight throws a great deep ball. Played his HS ball in Richmond. Coming off two straight seasons shortened by injury, I don't know how many teams are actively seeking him. Seems like both sides would benefit, but Speight might be seeking better.

False.

In a move certain to raise an eyebrow or two.. Sean Patterson, the older brother of Calvary quarterback Shea Patterson, who recently committed to Ole Miss, has been hired by Ole Miss.. as an associate director for recruiting operations.

"reflection on Harbaugh." LOL. Did you read what Speight said? Do you know that Peters is the presumed starter for 2018 with Dylan McCaffrey waiting in the wings? Get a grip man. Speight aspires to play in NFL, so it's imperative he get on the field next year. Much better chance to do that at UVA or somewhere else than at UM.

Did you see the injury to Peters? How do we even know that he will play next year. McCaffrey wasn't even good enough to beat out Korn this year. Where is your source for the assumption that Peters will be healthy enough to play next year and that he is the presumed starter over Speight. I thought that Speight played reasonably well in 2016 & 2017 and had some chance of being a starter in 2018. (Threw a very clutch pass against OSU in overtime in 2016)

Did you read what Speight said? He never gave a direct explanation for why he was leaving. Just nice things about Michigan in general.

Thanks for refreshing my memory.

Shea committed to Arizona as a high school freshman and then his brother (Sean) got an analyst job there. His brother then left Arizona for an offensive quality control assistant job at LSU, at which point Shea decommitted from Arizona and was reportedly deciding between Ole Miss and LSU (which already had Felipe Franks committed). Shea committed to Ole Miss, Sean resigned almost immediately from LSU, and a couple weeks later Sean got the job at Ole Miss.

In any event, it strikes me that several schools recognized they could get Shea by hiring his brother - their father said as much openly - but that doesn’t mean Ole Miss *also* paid Shea. Like I said, I wouldn’t paint every kid on the roster with the brush that they must have cheated - definitely would look into each kid’s circumstances.

Can get him by hiring his brother but the family drew the line at accepting money other than W2 payments.

Hiring a family member on staff isn’t against NCAA rules (wasn’t at the time anyway). Cash payments are impermissible benefits under NCAA rules. But you know that.

Of course, I’m not familiar enough with Sean Patterson’s resume to know the extent to which he was or was not qualified. That said, it remains the case that painting every Ole Miss recruit with “they cheated” is bad policy. Hell, it’s no different than what folks are doing to Greg Schiano right now.

You just made a drive by criticism with no substance. Speight said he liked his time at Michigan, but gave no direct reason for leaving. If he cared about Michigan, so much, why would he not want to compete for the starter's job? It is pure speculation to think that anyone has won the job for next year. (Possibly true though). Watching what happens down the road with respect to Speight is reasonable because he was a 2-year starter who had beat out Peters this year.

Apparently, you take at face value statements by employees when they leave (in the face of employer dissatisfaction) that they are voluntarily resigning or looking for better opportunities. People are complimentary towards others quite often, when it is in their practical interest to do so. Speight does have a practical reason to leave Michigan on good terms. It may be that his decision is highly personal and has nothing to do with Harbaugh. It also may be that he was dissatisfied with the coaching or other matters at Michigan that he decided to keep to himself.

A pair of Michigan players are joining quarterback Wilton Speight in transferring away from the Wolverines to continue their college careers.

Wide receiver Drake Harris and quarterback Alex Malzone announced Tuesday that they have been granted releases from the school and will seek graduate transfers.

Their decisions to transfer appear to be final, but reports of freshman offensive lineman Ja'Raymond Hall also deciding to leave the program might have been premature. Hall might still end up leaving, but he tweeted that he has not made a final decision.
