So, I am serious in saying no politics at all in this thread. As a very political person even I am refraining from it in this post.

I live in North Philly, one block south of Girard. It very much concerns me that officials in both Baltimore and Annapolis get this right in dealing with the mess in Baltimore because the reality is, for right or wrong, this is not the last civilian death that police in major cities will be responsible for this summer. I mean we are in the first of 6 months of decent weather in the NorthEast and we cannot have this be a familiar theme throughout the summer in different major cities.

Last fall the Philadelphia Ferguson rally, I will point out that this one was entirely peaceful and police escorted, came right down my street. I shutter to think of what would happen in my neighborhood if there were a non peaceful gathering.

I hope all of our fellow Nittany Lions were safe last night and continue to be in Baltimore and that this does not spread to other cities.

Unfortunately it's only a matter of time before this happens in Philly, or any other major city with similar demographics to Baltimore. You can see these coming from a mile away. It's just a matter of when, not if. I recommend moving.

In Philly, it will not be because of a nickel ride. They got past that in the Phila PD after a bad incident.

I guess following my request to keep politics out of it, when I post about stopping violence, is impossible when your politics is the spread of violence. If you respond to this one it'll be the last word bc I'm not having a debate on this.

One block south of Girard Ave.? Moving isn't a bad option in the current climate, especially with the long hot summer nights that are approaching.

It's an awesome brand new building, or it was brand new when i moved in 2 years ago, still awesome roof deck view of the skyline(I'd upload a picture but its not working for some reason, flag on me). The whole area is under construction for new and renovated homes as Fairmount Ave is a booming area. So I really don't want to move, I'd rather society fix these problems so moving is not necessary.

This is akin to the age-old question concerning an investment portfolio - can you sleep well at night under the current circumstances. If not, I would consider moving. One block south of Girard Ave. would not be a great place to be when N. Philly exploded like a powder keg. As you say, the long hot summer nights are yet to come. Nobody can predict these events, but you've been thinking about the possibility and are not comfortable.

I just replied to your first message too. Again, if you can sleep well at night and have strong reasons to stay, you should then have as much of a plan of preparedness in place as possible in the event that something would happen. Best wishes and I hope you and others stay safe.

If Frank Rizzo was still mayor you'd have nothing to worry about.

One other question - do you live alone? If not, you have the concern for the safety of others to consider too.

How can a "discussion" of such a topic NOT be political. Politics (business/culture) has created the two Americas. I grew up and worked in education in Philadelphia AND I have seen the two worlds. Say what you will, no-one looks in the mirror. As a "country" we do NOT really care.

Disagree. We care, but we feel helpless. And really, how the hell do you begin to fix something like this? The inner-city schools are this close to worthless and industry jobs such as used to be found at Bethlehem Steel's Sparrows Point plant just aren't there anymore.

I think you have to move the cops stations to the hoods if you want to clean up the hoods and the schools in the hoods. Plus, then there would be no cause for driving somebody around for 5 or 10 minutes to damage them.

A roommate, but he's responsible for himself. No kids or wife I'm responsible for, if so I'd already be gone.

Building isn't named, decent rent. It is like low rise condo type apartments. Being on the second/third floors, we get the roof deck. Behind two solid dead bolt doors, key code access only. So if I'm inside the only thing I'd have to worry about is my car on the street. But I walk to work everyday and that stuff can sneak up on you if you are stuck on the street.

I'm not going to move because I think the pros are still better than the potential problem that may never/ hopefully never happens, but it is scary because it could absolutely happen right where I'm at.
