Steelers trade

I wouldn't say that this has too much to do with James, just the fact that they have next to no depth behind him. Cost them next to nothing for was seems to be a decent talent, especially after the whole Ladarius Green charade.

How can this not have anything to do with James? It drops him on the depth chart.

As a Niners fan, if that makes McDonald your #1 TE, then you need another TE. He's overpaid garbage. They've been trying to trade him for 6 months now. The former idiot GM gave him a ridiculous deal. You didn't give up much, but I'll gladly take that 4th for him.

McDonald wasn't even a lock to make the 49ers roster. They basically unloaded him on Pittsburgh.

Tomlin implied that he wants more competition at tight end in general. One story said both tight ends needed to be goosed.

Great. We just drafted JJ as our second TE for our fantasy league.

Between the Outlaw, the X man, and now this dude, PT and catches has just taken a tumble.

They didn't really get a 4th for him, they also sent the Steelers their 5th round pick. Figuring the Steelers' pick will likely be a late 4th rounder and the 49ers will be a high 5th rounder, the Steelers basically traded about 10 draft slots for him. In other words, traded virtually nothing for him. This is a low risk deal for the Steelers, considering he already got his signing bonus paid by the 49ers.

yeah, here are Tomlin's comments, from an ESPN article on the trade:

Coach Mike Tomlin, who recalls liking McDonald's skill set coming out of Rice in 2013, has made clear his tight end crop needed an infusion of competition.

"The guys hadn't been consistently varsity enough for our comfort," Tomlin said of his rotation through the first three weeks of preseason games. "It's as black and white as that. They've had some moments positively and had some moments negatively. We were in the market for a guy who was NFL capable. McDonald is that.

"We're not going to anoint him in any way. We're going to put him in uniform like the rest of them and continue to allow them to sort themselves out. It's reasonable to expect the guys that are here to respond positively in the right way to his presence and elevate their play."

Yeah, it was a no brainer for the Niners to do this deal tho. They still have 4 TE's on the roster that they like. Get what you can.

The Steelers add a TE that has some potential for a 4th round pick, that will most likely be like a 5th round pick, and get a 5th round pick, which will only mean they moved down a few slots.
