I'll probably get some crap for this thread however I really don't mind.

People need to stop bringing up Joe Paterno and comparing him to Franklin and they did it to BOB. Joe would've never said that and Joe would never do that etc. Paterno had plenty of flaws as a coach and things have changed from 30 years ago

Paterno was probably one of the best coaches in the 80's and early 90s however he was pretty much terrible in 2000 and so on except the year they finished #3 but I pretty much give Bradley, Johnson, and Vanderlinden the credit for it

He put his son jay the QB coach which was probably the worst hire in sports history.

Galen Hall was one of most atrocious offensive coordinators ever

He underachieved as a coach with talent he had some years

Don't even get me started how Kirk Ferentz out coached him regularly

I love Paterno and would love to punch someone when they say "Joe Knew". Joe put Penn State on the map and pretty much built it. He was a great coach at one point and was a pretty bad one at one point in my opinion and the game was well past him.

The point is Paterno was no perfect coach he made plenty of mistakes over the years. I love Franklin and love everything he's doing with the team.

Just stop comparing the two.

As long as they play football at Penn State, you will hear the name Joe Paterno. He is the standard by which all Penn State coaches will be judged. This is not a Penn State phenomenon. At Alabama they still talk about the Bear. At OSU, Woody. At Florida State, Bobby. At Texas, Royal. At USC, McKay. This is not living in the past. It is honoring coaches who have built a foundation for those who follow. If at some future date Franklin is judged better than Joe Paterno, he will be one of the all time greats.

I love franklin & almost everything he does. He may prove to be a great coach
one day very soon ...ya know like you say Joe was for part of his tenure ...
He's human and should not have said what seemed like a petty dig.

Joe would never have posted a thread like this. Just saying.

My favorite things about Paterno:
  1. Success with honor
  2. Grand Experiment
  3. Modest (low pay, modest home, giving back to the school)
  4. Educating kids more important than money
  5. Defense first (Linebacker U), special teams, then offense

My favorite things about Franklin:
  1. Continued focus on academics
  2. Still committed to educating kids
  3. High energy
  4. More exciting offense

My least favorite thing about O'Brien:
  1. He stayed with the Patriots when PSU's recruiting class was falling apart.
  2. He told critics that PSU hired a coach or the next 5+ years, not for this year.
  3. Then he left early for the NFL which was where his heart was from the beginning.
  4. I remember a PSU player's response when O'Brien said he was leaving (I think D. Barnes but I'm not sure). It was something to the effect that he understood O'Brien leaving because it's all about the money. I think that's a horrible message for the kids.
I'm not saying O'Brien's a bad guy or that he was a bad coach. I just don't like $5 million plus salaries for college coaches but I realize that's the way of the world now. I miss having one of the lower paid coaches in the B1G who gave a large part of his salary back to the university. I continue to be a huge PSU fan and I don't spend much time comparing Franklin to Paterno but we lost something and that will always stick with me. And when ignorant people unfairly attack Joe or PSU's culture I'll continue to respond rather than bite my lip. I don't see that as being disrespectful to Franklin.

I'd be willing to bet no one compares James to Joe more than James. He's a big fan. I'm a huge fan of both.
No doubt. Who didn't think of Joe when the crowd booed Franklin for sending the punt team out in the 4th quarter? Joe would have loved what ensued. Great punt and coverage. Great defense and a safety. Beautiful. Good football.

Post-2000 Joe was not good. At this point, Franklin is more like Paterno than Paterno was.
Let me count the ways:
1. Fort Knox on any information. Injuries, personnel, status, game plans, etc.
2. Toys with the media.
3. Learns from his mistakes and is accountable at all times.
4. Takes interest in his players and never disrespects them.
5. While doing this, he also has a doghouse and if a player violates, in they go.
6. Celebrates University pride over individual stardom.
7. Supports the entire University athletic program and all sports.
8. Is approachable to fans, yet maintains personal dignity and proper distance.
9. Is feared by opponents and criticized by their media.
10. Is also hated by opponents because he now beats them. Regularly.

And while you're at it, stop comparing:
1. Any modern Prez to FDR;
2. Any modern football player to Bradshaw;
3.Any modern Baseball coach to Joe Torre;
4. The 1st amendment in 1960 to the first Amendment now; and, last in this random and utterly incomplete listing.....
5. Yourself to a thinking person.

All well and good, however, Joe was Joe and Franklin is Franklin. Don't expect Franklin to be Joe.
I think most will expect Franklin to be his own man, but there will be inevitable comparisons as to record, bowl wins, rankings, graduation rates, etc.

Shiat, I hope Franklin doesn't do that too often. That is an impossible standard. He should just continue doing the best he can. Seems pretty damn good to me.

Your sentiment is correct, but some of your statements (the game had passed him by, he was a bad coach) are just wrong. He knew exactly what he was doing, and understood football and scheme just fine, thanks. He simply was conservative by nature, and believed that execution trumped scheme. He opened up the offense when he had superior, experienced talent (see 1982, 1994) or when it fit his players (2005, 2008, for example, offenses designed by Galen and Jay) and was highly succcessful in many other years relying on defense, special teams and ball control offense, in that order. And that would include the years at the end of his career. This idea that the game had "passed him by" and he was 30 years behind the times in scheme is simple-minded, sound byte driven, group think. People made these same accusations in the 1980's. Yes, perhaps he would find JoMo's up-temp offense to be "too cute" and "fooling people" rather than lining up and simply beating them, but that doesn't mean that he was a bad coach. I love Franklin and the new, wide open offense and the energy of the young staff, but I also understand that there is more than one way to skin a cat.
