Sunday Numbers: NCAA Titles Edition

The long, dark off-season is almost over and March will be here before you know it. The emergence of Penn State has the two greatest programs in the history of the sport, Oklahoma State and Iowa, in long, by their standards, title droughts while the Nittany Lions chase history.

See whats on the line this year!

A couple regarding Penn State, among other items at the link.

2

The number of programs who have won six NCAA titles in seven years, Oklahoma State and Iowa. Penn State has a chance to join the club this year with another title. The best title streaks in history are nine in a row (Iowa, 1978-1986), 11 of 12 (Iowa, 1975-1986) and 13 of 15 (OSU, 1928-1942).

With one more title, Penn State will tie Oklahoma for third on the all-time list with 7 NCAA Division I national championships. That would leave them behind Iowa State (8), Iowa (23) and Oklahoma State (34).
NOTE: If OK St, IA and IA St are now ahead of OK, then tying OK would appear to be a tie for 4th. Just sayin...

Cael is climbing the charts too. From the NCAA site:

"Dan Gable coached Iowa to 15 NCAA team titles, tops among NCAA coaches. Oklahoma State’s Edward Gallagher (11), Art Griffith (8), and Myron Roderick (7) rank 2-3-4. With his 2016 championship, Penn State’s Cael Sanderson ties current Oklahoma State head coach John Smith with five, one behind former Iowa State boss Harold Nichols."
