Suriano update

Great news for NS and for fans able to see him wrestle. The situation is a bummer for Metzler who had a year of eligibility burned for 2 duals.

There has to be more to the story--Burning RS that late in season and NS okay--just dont add up.

I'm sure NJ.COM is busy writing a scathing article about Suriano not being available to the press ;) Or perhaps they're only critical of PSU folks for not talking to the press.

Maybe he's just too 'locked in' and doesn't want to be disturbed.

If what Goodale is saying is true, I'm inclined to think that the "bubble wrap" theory is partly true. Suriano is his only shot at coaching a National Champ, and telling future recruits that "Hey, see, you can be a National Champ at Rutgers." Face of the program.

They might figure that Metzler will be sitting behind Nick in the future, and why not let him start some matches. He can redshirt next year, and still have the same two years of eligibility after Nick graduates. This is assuming that Nick can actually stay healthy for an entire season.

As is:
2017-2018: Start a few matches
2018-2019: RS
2019-2020: backup

Alternative:
2017-2018: RS
2018-2019: backup
2019-2020: backup

That's a hell of a crystal ball. The point is they killed his shirt for two duals that meant very little except window dressing this late in the season. Pretty much the definition of "needlessly".

There very well could be more to the story, but no matter what it's still a bummer for Metzler.

Maybe Goodale will get him a 6th year. If he can get an extra year for Ashnault, after wrestling 18 matches before an in injury his Fr year, he can probably fake some paper work for Metztler too.

They needed to win the last two duals to avoid the first losing record in 10 years. Seems to me Coach Goodale was willing to burn the shirt to insure a winning team record. Possibly self preservation?

How late can a coach change his entry for B1G's? It seems like they should have to submit their lineup before everyone voted on seeds or they could end up reseeding weight classes at the last minute.

Rutgers also has Aguilar coming in next year ... 3 guys for 2 spots until Suriano graduates.

That's what you want from a coach - placing his own interests ahead of the interests of individual wrestlers (as long as he doesn't need them).

There is not a direct quote from Goodale saying that Suriano will wrestle at B1Gs this weekend.

True not a direct quote but the reporter said Goodale said it unless the reporter is not being truthful

Rutgers coach Scott Goodale said the nation's top-ranked 125-pounder, who has not wrestled since Feb. 2 due to illness, is 100 percent and will have no issues competing in this weekend's Big Ten Championships at Michigan State.

Maybe Metzler wanted to be a starter for a match instead of sitting on the bench his entire career. By the way, he can red shirt next year behind Suriano.

Yeah. A guy that has been so sick he couldn't wrestle for a month is going to be 100% this weekend. I don't think he's 100% by any means.

That's assuming that he was actually sick and not out for some other reason/purpose.

Here’s the full interview. Like Papa said not a direct quote. The reporter asks him if Suriano will wrestle in B1Gs and Goodale says “yep” and then goes on.

I found it interesting when talking about Lewis. Seems as If Goodale claims Lewis “doing his own thing” training wise.

I would think the coaching staff would be setting up the training for each wrestler not the other way around but maybe I’m wrong

It’s possible he had flu early, got over that and then had some type of infection that is now gone.

We’ll see Saturday. I hope he’s 100%

"Nick he's ready to go. He's gonna wrestle?"
Never asked if he was wrestling at B1Gs. I assume he's gonna wrestle at some point.

Surely Goodale wouldn’t burn a couple 125 pound redshirts just to avoid a loosing season, right?

Their last 3 duals and the 125 Goodale sent out to secure an 8 & 7 season:
Feb. 9 — 20-12 loss vs Minny (Ecklof)
Feb. 16 — 24-12 win vs Wisky (Metzler)
Feb. 18 — 28-7 win vs Princeton (Metzler)

Well, after all the hype emanating from Jersey this season, a losing record would have looked brutal.

Suriano WILL be wrestling this weekend. Truth! 100% guaranteed. It IS happening. Count on it. Book it. Bet on it. No question. No doubt. Fact ..... Drop Mic.

Before you ask what my source is for the above statement.......Unlike others....I will reveal my source. It is............Wine....LOTS of wine! Since "Suriano still out" made it 8 pages and 38,000 views with absolutely NO substantiation.....Finally...at 2:30 AM...I realized I have just as much real info as anyone else. Plus........just like most......I have a 100% chance of being correct. If Nick doesn't wrestle...I will just point out that I never said he would be wrestling at the Big 10's......just wrestling...perhaps with his dog or girlfriend or decisions. Damn....this is good wine :)

Questioner: "Nick, he's ready to go, he's gonna wrestle?"

Goodale: "Yup, he's preparing.... looks great... has been training last couple weeks"

Other than specifying wrestling at the Big10, NS is a go.

On the other hand, wrestling coaches are the worse of coaches in any other sport in disclosing the truth about the status of wrestlers

My take is the coach does not have control of the team--his top guys are training on their own? If Richie wants to change is training methods he can? . big picture--this is why RU is will never be a top team with current staff...IMO

That and the fact HS coaching sensation Goodale cannot attract top recruits up against Cael, Ryan, Brands et al, Pritz has the pedigree but hes not HC..

Also NS's absence is more a result of daddy than anyone else.. You guys at PSU should know what I mean

...word is he has been secretly working out with Nikko in his basement all these weeks... :)

Good point 1stplace! But, that assumes that both NS and Metzler remain at 125. Not sure that that's guaranteed.

Do you actually remember how pathetic Rutgers was before Goodale got there? Even when they joined the Big Ten many people were predicting that Indiana and Maryland would beat them. These things take time and at a place as sorry as Rutgers was they take even longer. Goodale has done an amazing job there!
