Can someone explain what the difference was in what Bonehead Boeheim did and what went on at UNC? I thought both cases dealt with academic cheating type things, fake grades etc...so why did "Cuse get nailed and UNC get zippo....maybe Glov will chime in. Not trying to be a smart- ass here...I truly want to know....

You will drive yourself absolutely crazy if you try to determine the "logic" the NCAA uses in these cases. It typically comes down to how much of a statement the NCAA wants/needs to make at the time. It is just like trying to figure out what females are thinking!

UNC fought like hell, did not allow consideration of the Wainstein report (link: https://www.si.com/college-football/2014/10/22/north-carolina-academic-fraud-report-released), spent millions on lawyers, exerted pressure wherever they could, and the NCAA blinked.

Unlike Penn State’s BOT and administration, UNC fought the NCAA every step of the way and challenged every NCAA violation that was charged. At the end of the multi-year process, UNC asserted that this was not an NCAA matter because UNC atheletes did not receive any special treatment since the “paper classes” were available to all students and not just athletes. The NCAA accepted this.

In UNCa case, there wasn’t cheating, but easy/fake classes, and some non-athletes took the classes so it’s an university integrity issue as opposed to an athletic specific issue.
