I haven't, but a friend has, and he has a blog, or a facebook page about a lot of this, see Ralph Pace photography and see what he says. for a youngin' (30ish) he's done a lot, including a lot underwater.

I was on a 2week Safari in Kenya 4 years ago. We had only 7 in our group, all friends, and had a unbelievable time. We were in 4 different locations, Sambora, Lewa, on the Indian Ocean in Manda Bay on finally on the Masa Mara.
We saw the big 5 up close and had everything from luxury tents, with bathrooms, to small tents when we were on the hiking portion of the trip. Wild life was great and we had excellent guides, who were extremely knowledgeable on game, plants, birds, geology. We took over 1,000 pictures and have viewed them to remember the experience. Check out Royal Africa Safari as they are an excellent tour company.
An experiment you will never forget.
I once thought of hunting in Africa, but after the trip would never think of hunting those magnificent animals.

I've noticed that a number of tours now do *not* go through Nairobi due to problems with robbery, etc. We've looked it up a few times, but the cost always made us shy back. If you are a zoo member, a number of zoos host safari trips--but IMHO, they seem to be for bigger spenders.

What is the 'Big 5'? Lion, elephant, rhino, tiger...?
