I see a lot of articles that speak to how great it is for a kicker to get a touchback i.e. 60% of the kicks were touchbacks. Here is my question. from the kicking side of the ball, do you go for a touchback and let the opposition start at the 25 or do you let them run it out?
From the receiving side of the ball, do you take the touchback because you typically have better field position than running it out?
From what I have seen, most college teams avg slightly above 22 yds / kick off. So if the ball is caught between the 3 or into the end zone, field position is improved by letting the ball go into the end zone. There are fewer penalties as well as fewer injuries.
Yeah, the kick off is an exciting play with a chance to break one eg. Derek Williams. It can be a big momentum changer if the return goes past the 30, but from a money ball standpoint, is it better to always start at the 25?
What say ye!
