'I love representing the US': Wrestler Tamyra Mensah-Stock sets social media alight with her show of national pride as she wins gold in Tokyo after slew of recent anti-American protests by woke athletes

  • Tamyra Mensah-Stock made history Tuesday, becoming the second-ever American and the first black woman to win Gold in Olympic women's wrestling

  • She became victorious in the freestyle light heavyweight category after defeating Blessing Oborududu of Nigeria in the finals
  • Her pride for representing the US was in contrast to other recent high-profile political protests by American athletes competing in the games
  • On Sunday, shot putter Raven Saunders raised her arms above her head on the podium and formed an 'X' with her wrists
  • On June 26 during the Olympic trials Gwen Berry turned away from the American flag during the National Anthem
  • Mensah-Stock started wrestling at age 15, and her father died in a car crash coming home from one of her matches
  • She vowed to give $30,000 of her winnings to her mother so she could buy a food truck

Agree! Great counterbalance to some of the ridiculous crap that gets shown.

1 million percent class. Giving out love to everyone. That’s how it’s done!

I need to find that food truck in Katy Texas when they start it. It will be huge. That certainly will be my route to Houston going forward when visiting my daughter.

Congrats Tamyra. Good for her. Good for Houston. Good for Texas. Good for the USA. Great for wrestling

I don't know how to make this happen, but maybe some of the more business and internet savvy guys posting here can come up with a plan. It would be really cool if we could set something up to send a ton of advance orders to Tamyra's mom. The meals could go to local homeless people or whoever needs it. I'll bet Tamyra would be absolutely thrilled.

I find it a little distasteful that conservative media outlets have used her wonderful interview as a cudgel to critique other athletes. There was nothing political about what she said, nor did she make comments about other athletes.

She hasn't commented on it directly, but I've seen a couple of her friends/training partners comment on twitter and they're pissed. She doesn't deserve it.

It would be awesome if all these outlets and pundits were sharing her video and praising her without then saying "she isn't like those other bad woke athletes" They're just using her for their own agenda, to drive social media engagement and make money.

Agree--let Tamyra do the talking here. I have absolutely zero interest in what point any pundit wants to make/score regarding her amazing personality and achievement.

Aren't you doing the same thing?

Tamyra has an electric personality. The Bloodround guys (I think, maybe Inside Trip) have had her on the podcast in the past. Tamyra delivers every time. She's en route to stardom now.

I agree that her post-match interview should not be used as political fodder. At the same time, I think it's fair and (should be) inoffensive to be a proud American listening to same. I also thought it was cool that she referenced her father being from Ghana, apparently a rival of her finals opponent's native Nigeria.

No? I'm praising her for what she actually said which had nothing to do with other athletes or "wokeness." Others are spinning what she said into negativity towards other people. That's wrong imo.
Comparing and contrasting is a fairly common human trait. one position is wildly popular and deserves universal praise...... the other......is offensive to lots of people.

Using the overwhelming positivity and pride of one person to attack others is wrong. If Tamyrah wanted to attack other athletes she would have done it herself.

Just because the attacks agree with your politics doesn't make it right.

Eat a snickers, she’s famous now and she earned it

Who's pissed? The "pay us the same though we don't generate the same revenue" crowd? Or is it the crowd that thinks it sucks here even though folks from other countries sail the open sea on a raft or walk through deserts to get here?

Who cares? She didn't say anything political, so her words shouldn't be used politically. That simple. Let her have her moment.

Tamyra is amazing. Not ashamed to admit I welled up with her a bit during that post-match interview.

l also want to recognize what an incredible ambassador for the sport of wrestling Adeline Gray is. Did any of you catch her studio interview with LoLo Jones? Easily the best athlete interview of the Games. Remarkably well spoken, humble and grounded.

Well it does to them…….. you clearly don’t like folks who disagree with you. Good luck

I was thinking, while reading the OP, that it seemed odd. If you want to show how positive she is and praise her for it, there was no need to mention other athletes. I immediately thought there was an agenda behind it.

For me, I have thoroughly enjoyed the Olympics, watching many events and catching some sports I've never seen or had interest in. The whole "woke athlete controversy" hasn't crossed my mind. I could care less what an athlete does if it doesn't affect the event I'm watching. Who cares if Raven Saunders makes an X with her arms? Why does that matter? It has zero effect on anyone's ability to watch the games unless they allow it to. The woman's mother died while she was in Tokyo. That's a much bigger story! The internet and related media is full of people telling how we should think about things. If we think for ourselves and brush that aside, life would be much better.

In summation.... I agree!

That's my $.02
